The University will once again require undergraduate applicants to submit standardized test scores, the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees announced Thursday.
The change, which comes years after the University made the submission of test scores optional during the COVID-19 pandemic to mitigate the lack of access to tests at the time, will apply to The University of Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Tonjanita Johnson, senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the UA System, said students applying to be freshmen for the 2028-2029 academic year will be required to submit test scores. Applicants with a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 who are applying for the 2027-2028 academic year are not required to submit their scores.
“We have found that standardized test scores provide valuable insight into academic success at our universities and as part of a holistic review process serve as a predictor that is helpful to ensure the success of our students,” she said.
Multiple colleges announced this year that they will reinstate the submission of standardized test scores as a requirement for admission, including Princeton University, Penn State, Ohio State University and the University of Miami.
Following the pandemic, the University upheld its test-optional admission process. Former Provost James Dalton told The Crimson White in 2021 that the test-optional system was “very successful” and that candidates were looked at in a “more holistic way.”
A news release from UA News Center said the update reflects the University’s commitment to “evaluating students’ full potential based on balancing academic achievement, extracurricular involvement and personal experiences alongside standardized test results.
The University said test scores will be used as supplements to the overall files of applicants and will not disqualify them from admission.
