Form child actor and Ned's Declassified star Devon Werkheiser has broken his silence on the heartrending video showing his former co-star Tylor Chase homeless in the streets of Riverside, California.
“Tylor was a sensitive, sweet and kind kid,” the 34-year-old Werkheiser told TMZ. “It is heartbreaking to see him this way.”
In his interview, Werkheiser mentioned that he hasn't seen the 36-year-old Chase since Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide ended in nearly 20 years ago. However, he was quick to wish the best for his former co-star, highlighting the difficulties surrounding mental health and addiction.
“Anyone who has dealt with severe addiction and deep mental health issues knows it’s an unbelievably challenging situation if they don’t want help,” Werkheiser added.
Originally recorded in September, the viral video surfacing online shows an unkempt Chase recognized by a passerby in Riverside. When asked whether he was a former Disney child actor, Chase corrected the person recording him, confirming that he was a former cast member on Nickelodeon's 2000s-era comedy, Ned's Declassified Survival Guide.
Though the video has since circulated across social media, Werkheiser (who starred as Ned's Declassified's lead character Ned Bigby) discussed the different ways to go about helping Chase, emphasizing constant "support and patience" rather than economic aid.
“It’s an everyday uphill battle to course correct. It requires a ton of support and patience and time,” the 34-year-old said.
“My only hope is that from this exposure, someone with real understanding and resources can step in, get Tylor into treatment, and help him get back on track,” Werkheiser said of the video. “We all want a happy ending.”
Premiering in September 2004, Ned's Declassified ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon before concluding in June 2007. Featuring a large ensemble cast, the series specifically focused on the trials and tribulations of middle school life, with the characters sharing helpful "tips" to surviving sixth, seventh and eighth grade.
