Two members of the Internal Security apparatus affiliated with the Ministry of Interior and a third fighter belonging to the National Guard faction in Suwayda province (southern Syria) were killed in clashes between the two sides at dawn on Tuesday, 23 December.
A civilian was also killed, and eight others were wounded in Suwayda province, according to information relayed by local sources in the governorate.
Enab Baladi was unable to obtain details from an independent party.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that two Internal Security members were killed in the village of Rima Hazem in the western countryside of Suwayda, after coming under attack by local factions.
The forces then responded by targeting the site of the attack, leading to dead and wounded among the ranks of local factions, the correspondent added.
The Director of Public Relations in Suwayda province, Qutaiba Azzam, told Enab Baladi that the factions were the ones who first violated the agreement by targeting Internal Security forces with a drone, which resulted in two deaths.
Two local civilian sources in Suwayda denied the government’s account in comments to Enab Baladi, saying that Internal Security forces had shelled the town of Atil with random mortar fire, killing two people, one a member of the National Guard loyal to the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Syria, Hikmat al-Hijri, and the other a civilian, in addition to several injuries.
The two sources said that afterward, local factions launched a “retaliatory” attack on Internal Security positions in the village of Rima Hazem.
The National Guard issued a statement accusing government forces of violating the agreement, saying they had targeted “civilians” with mortar shells, heavy machine guns and drones.
In the statement, published on the faction’s Facebook page, the National Guard said government forces had targeted the town of Atil with random mortar shells fired from the villages of Rima Hazem and al-Mansoura in the western countryside of Suwayda, killing two and injuring eight others, some of them in critical condition.
The statement added that the western axis of Suwayda city came under similar attacks with mortar shells fired from Tel Hadid in the western countryside, which caused damage limited to private property.
Government forces also carried out, according to the statement, an attack on the axis of the civilian prison and the transport directorate using heavy machine guns and mortar shells, without any change in the lines of contact, while National Guard forces responded to the sources of fire and managed to disable two vehicles mounted with 23 mm heavy machine guns and directly target a mortar launch platform.
Previous clash
Suwayda had already seen clashes between local factions and Internal Security forces affiliated with the Syrian Interior Ministry on 15 December, which continued until late at night.
At the time, Enab Baladi’s Daraa correspondent reported that the clashes were centered in the western countryside of Suwayda, after local factions targeted an Internal Security position on Tel Hadid hill with a 23 mm anti-aircraft gun.
A local source in Suwayda, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told Enab Baladi then that government forces had targeted the industrial area in the western countryside with a drone, wounding four civilians on Monday afternoon, one of them seriously.
After that, mortar shells were observed falling in the area along with heavy machine gun fire, which led to a position belonging to Internal Security on Tel Hadid being hit in response by local factions, the source added.
At the time, Qutaiba Azzam, Director of the Public Relations Office in Suwayda province, denied to Enab Baladi that government forces had targeted the industrial area with a drone, saying that what happened was an explosion inside the area.
The National Guard issued a statement accusing government forces of violating the agreement between the two sides, saying they had targeted the western axis and adjacent residential neighborhoods with mortar shells accompanied by bursts from 23 mm heavy machine guns.
It noted that its forces had dealt with the sources of fire according to the appropriate procedures and had secured full control over the targeted axis, as in the other sectors.
According to the statement, the targeting of the western axis with a drone led to four injuries, in addition to shrapnel hitting private property in the area, which endangers residents’ lives and heightens the tension caused by these repeated violations.
Suwayda events
The Suwayda events began on 12 July, after reciprocal kidnappings between residents of the al-Maqous neighborhood in Suwayda city, which has a majority Bedouin population, and members of the Druze community. The incidents escalated the next day into mutual clashes.
The Syrian government intervened on 14 July to end the confrontation, but its intervention was accompanied by violations against Druze civilians, which pushed local factions to respond, including those that had previously cooperated with the Defense and Interior Ministries.
On 16 July, government forces withdrew from Suwayda after coming under Israeli strikes. This was followed by violations and acts of revenge against Bedouin residents in the province, which in turn led to the dispatch of military convoys in the form of “tribal support mobilizations” in their defense.
After that, the Syrian government and Israel reached an agreement, mediated by the United States, providing for a halt to military operations.
