Displacement from Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiya neighborhoods in Aleppo

Displacement from inside and around the Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiya neighborhoods in Aleppo city (northern Syria) has continued since the early hours of Tuesday morning, 23 December, following a night of security tension and clashes in several areas of Aleppo.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent reported that families have been leaving the two neighborhoods intermittently, heading toward quieter areas amid anxiety and fear of a renewed escalation in the coming hours.

The displacement movement has not been limited to Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiya, but has also included neighborhoods close to the contact lines, among them the Sheikh Taha neighborhood in Aleppo city.

Some families left their homes as a precaution, as fears grew that clashes or shelling could once again reach their surroundings.

In parallel, security agencies have barred entry into Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiya since Monday, 22 December.

Ahmad Jomaa, a resident of al-Ashrafiya, told Enab Baladi that he has not been able to enter the neighborhood since clashes broke out on Monday evening.

He pointed out that roads leading to the neighborhood were completely closed, preventing him from reaching his home.

For his part, Majd Kurdi, a resident of Sheikh Maqsoud, told Enab Baladi that he tried several times to enter the neighborhood, but all his attempts failed due to the closure of its entrances.

He confirmed that entry into the neighborhood’s surroundings has almost completely stopped, while movement out of the neighborhood is still permitted.

    Displacement from nearby neighborhoods

In the same context, Issam Karman, a resident of the Sheikh Taha neighborhood near Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo city, told Enab Baladi that he left his neighborhood after the clashes, in anticipation of them flaring up again.

This came after a large number of shells fell in the area’s vicinity, prompting him to leave in search of a safer place.

The al-Layramoun area and the Shayhan roundabout in northern Aleppo city also saw an almost complete standstill in movement, which directly affected commercial and economic activity.

Movement in the al-Layramoun industrial zone in northern Aleppo city came to a complete halt after entry to the area was banned, leading to the closure of several workshops and factories and the suspension of daily work.

A general state of anticipation prevails as people wait to see where the security situation in the city will head.

Ahmad Taha, who works at a sewing workshop in the al-Layramoun industrial zone, told Enab Baladi that workers were forced to leave the area in haste on Monday evening after clashes escalated, amid fear and confusion.

He added that today, a total ban on entry to the area prevents workers from returning to their workshops and brings work to a complete stop.

    Relative calm after the truce

According to al-Ikhbariya, the final toll of casualties from the targeting of residential neighborhoods in Aleppo city by Asayish forces rose to four people killed and nine injured.

Aleppo city witnessed a relative calm on the evening of Monday, 22 December, after a series of clashes and mutual shelling between the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian army.

Tensions were concentrated around the Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiya neighborhoods and the al-Layramoun and Shayhan roundabouts in the northern part of the city.

The calm coincided with talk of negotiations between the two sides for a ceasefire and to prevent the targeting of civilian areas, following hours of security tension that affected wide swathes of Aleppo.

The Governor of Aleppo, Azzam al-Gharib, had announced the temporary suspension of work and classes in all public and private schools and universities, as well as government departments in the center of Aleppo city, on Tuesday, 23 December, due to the current situation.

The decision excluded employees in institutions whose work requires them to continue providing medical care and emergency services.
