Former Senator, 53, Shares Devastating Advanced Cancer Diagnosis

Former Republican Senator Ben Sasse has revealed devastating health news. On December 23, Sasse took to X, formerly Twitter, to share that he has been diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer.

His post began, "Friends- This is a tough note to write, but since a bunch of you have already started to suspect something, I'll cut to the chase: Last week I was diagnosed with metastasized, stage-four pancreatic cancer, and am gonna die."

As the Mayo Clinic details, "Pancreatic cancer rarely is found at its early stages when the chance of curing it is greatest." Being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, as Sasse has, means that the cancer has spread, or metastasized, beyond the pancreas. It is generally not considered curable.

Johns Hopkins Medicine indicates that the five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with Stage IV cancer is just one percent. The institution's website notes, "The average patient diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer will live for about one year after diagnosis."

In his tweet, Sasse explained, "Advanced pancreatic is nasty stuff; it's a death sentence."

"I've got less time than I'd prefer. This is hard for someone wired to work and build, but harder still as a husband and a dad. I can't begin to describe how great my people are," Sasse wrote.

Sasse, 53, and his wife, Melissa Sasse, have three children. Their oldest daughter, Corrie, is currently in the U.S. Air Force. Their second daughter, Alex, recently graduated from college a semester early. Their youngest, a son named Breck, is 14.

"I couldn't be more grateful to constantly get to bear-hug this motley crew of sinners and saints," Sasse wrote.

The former senator from Nebraska wrote about his faith and noted, "I'll have more to say. I'm not going down without a fight." He stated, "One sub-part of God's grace is found in the jawdropping advances science has made the past few years in immunotherapy and more."

Sasse admitted that their family is "zealously embracing a lot of gallows humor in our house" right now, despite the devastating diagnosis. He ended his post by writing, "With great gratitude, and with gravelly-but-hopeful voices, Ben — and the Sasses."

Within just a couple of hours, Sasse had received nearly 5,000 comments voicing support and over 31,000 "likes" from others signaling the same.

Vice President J.D. Vance commented, "Praying for you and your family, Ben. Love your positive spirit."

Comments came flooding in from supporters and colleagues of all political persuasions. Former politicians Adam Kinzinger, Justin Amash,Jeff Flake, and Michael Steele were among those who left notes of support, as did numerous pundits and reporters.

Sasse joined the Senate representing Nebraska in 2014, and he was re-elected in 2020. He was one of seven Republican senators, noted The New York Post, who voted to convict President Donald Trumpduring his second impeachment trial.

He left his role in the Senate in January 2023 and served as president at the University of Florida until July 2024.
