We talked earlier this offseason about (brief) old friend Sean Newcomb, who was quietly a really interesting free agent target for teams after a strong 2025 season. He was mostly a multi-inning reliever for the A’s and Red Sox (particularly dominant in the second half with the A’s), though he did make five starts to open the season. I really liked him as a possible utility knife for the Cubs – a guy who could be a multi-inning reliever, but also a swing-starter, and also maybe a match-up lefty.
Once the Cubs signed both Hoby Milner and Caleb Thielbar, it seemed less likely to happen, though, and sure enough, Newcomb is now off the board:
The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb on a one-year, $4.5-million contract. To make room for Newcomb on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated left-hander Ryan Rolison for assignment.
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) December 23, 2025First of all, another solid get for the White Sox, with the bonus that they might be able to trade Newcomb for value if he shows by midseason that his breakout last year was sustainable.
Second of all, it’s kinda shocking that he was able to get only a little bit more than lefties like Milner, Thielbar, and Drew Pomeranz. He’s had a whole lot of injury issues prior to 2025, yes, but obviously the other guys have warts, too. Throw in the fact that Newcomb might be able to be a swing guy for you, and there’s a ton of potential value there. Heck, I wonder if the White Sox offered him an opportunity to start and he took a touch less to do that.
Speaking to the broader market, I don’t see a ton of impact here, other than the fact that this mid-tier of the relief market continues to shake out. Could see another signing or two break before Christmas.
