70s Rock Icon Was So Embarrassed After Bob Dylan Heard Her Cover

Even a superstar like Stevie Nicks isn’t immune to the occasional slip-up. While she’s had her share of lyric flubs in recent performances, this memorable mistake took place years ago.

In 1986, Nicks met Bob Dylan for the first time when she was invited to join him and Tom Petty on stage during their True Confessions Tour.

After 32 days on the road as a special guest, Nicks decided it was time to record an official cover — a Dylan song, no less. She managed to persuade the folk legend to join her on "Just Like a Woman," which, naturally, only raised the stakes even higher.

When it came time to record the song, she made sure to give it her all. But unbeknownst to her, she had made one glaring mistake.

By the time Dylan arrived to record his harmonica, Nicks had already completed her part. She explained to Steven P. Wheeler in 2019, “When he heard the song, I had already done the final vocal because there was no way I was gonna play an unfinished track for Bob Dylan of one of his songs, so it was finished except for what he would add to it. "

When they played the track back, the error became obvious. Nicks had misremembered one of the lyrics, singing, “with her amphetamines and her pills,” instead of the correct line, “pearls.”

Dylan politely pointed out the mistake, and Nicks, horrified, couldn’t help but laugh, “You’re kidding!”

She recalled, “I was so embarrassed [laughs]. And I told him that this was the take that I did with the original band, and I don’t think I can do the vocal like that again. I can’t match the sound of it. And he just said, ‘That’s okay.’”

Fortunately, Dylan approved the track, and the changed word added an extra layer of meaning for fans.
