It might be a cold and gloomy winter morning, but as soon as Pentatonix enters the room, the vibe immediately shifts to merry and bright. Comprised of Matt Sallee, Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi and Kevin Olusola, the world's most famous vocal group visited Parade's headquarters for a fun and festive chat about their earliest days, the joys of touring with family, holiday favorites and more.
And if you haven't finished your holiday shopping, you'll definitely want to check out their curated list of picks from Kay Jewelers. The group partnered with the beloved jewelry brand and some of their selected pieces are up to 57% off. They even recorded their own version of—you guessed it—the iconic Kay Jewelers jingle. Parade: It’s so good to see you all! Let's take it back: Tell me about the formation of Pentatonix.
Scott: Well, Mitch, Kirstin and I originally got together to do this radio contest to eventually meet the cast of Glee. We lost—well we thought we lost—but recently found we were actually disqualified because I turned the submission in late! But that was the genesis, and then we were on the a show called The Sing-Off.
Matt, you joined the group in 2017. What has the journey been like for you over the last eight years?
Matt: It’s been a dream. I was a fan of the group before I joined, so it made the transition with the fans really special. They were like, "Oh, I can see myself in you because you were a fan and now you get to be a part of the group.” It’s been amazing. We’ve all grown so much. When I joined, we were all single. Now, we have families, marriages and kids!
Pentatonix THIS or THAT: Christmas Edition (5:51)Speaking of kids, how do you balance parenting with a heavy touring schedule?
Kirstin: My daughter first came on tour when she was four-and-a-half months old and so that was really great. The group has been really supportive. Kevin was the first one that had a kid, so we all just love each other and we’re all family. We’ve really paved the way for each other. I really love having my kids on tour because we get to spend Christmas in each city and make special memories—seeing the snow, the shopping, the carousels—so it’s really fun.
Scott, you shared news about a sonogram at a recent concert.
Scott: Oh yes! We got to see the ultrasound. It’s so wild. I have that little app that’s like “Your baby is the size of a pool ball.”
Matt: I love that.

One part of the show that really stands out is when you play the drums and the cello. When was the first time you did that?
Kevin: Oh yeah, it was at the Hollywood Bowl. We were doing an interpolation of Beethoven’s Fifth and Matt had a tom-set.
Matt: Kevin’s humble. He’s an amazing cellist and there were so many videos of him beatboxing and playing the cello. But cello-boxing is what you call it, and so we’ve talked about doing things together and enhancing that experience and we’ve grown from one little drum to a percussion set. And then one day, Kevin's like, “You should just play a drumset"—and so we actually built it! My brother’s a drummer and I started playing casually because of him. But when Kevin said you should play, I was like, "Okay I’m gonna go for it!"
Kirstin: They’ve both put a lot of work into building that moment. It’s really good.
View this post on InstagramWhat is it like knowing you’ve gone from "choir kids" to being the music that students study in school?
Kirstin: Amazing! It was so impactful for us and we did all-state choir and so it’s really amazing to think that we’re a part of that.
Mitch: I just remember how important it was to have that be around us as choir kids and being in theatre as well. The memories that you create are so unforgettable and it feels like a really formative time.
Scott: And the music we did in choir and like, the things we consumed and participated in in high school were like, so inspiring to us, which led us to create Pentatonix and led us to make this music. And now to know that it’s kind of paying it forward and inspiring kids who are making art as well is a really cool thing.

All: November 1st!
Hot cocoa or peppermint latte?
All: Peppermint latte!
Wearing matching family pajamas or not participating?
All: Family pajamas!
Ugly Sweater or Black Tie holiday party?
All: Black tie!
Matt: I don’t know; ugly sweater parties are really fun cause people go all out and find the most random sweaters and get creative with it.
Mitch: I mean, it’s comfy!
Kirsten: I love a glam Christmas though.
Scott: Being indoors with a bunch of people dancing with a sweater on is my nightmare. I would be so hot!
