Dozens of volunteers are set to grab their binoculars and head out Saturday for Greeley’s 51st annual National Audubon Christmas Bird Count.
Volunteers are slated to canvass a 15-mile diameter centered at 8th Avenue and 10th Street in Greeley for the local count, which gives a snapshot of how the overall bird populations are faring in the area, according to a release by compiler Paul Lightsey.
Lightsey has participated in the Greeley count since 1978 and was named a compiler in 2001. Compilers collect all the data from participants and send the results to the National Audubon Cornell Lab of Ornithology in New York State.
After the Greeley count was conducted a few times in the 1930s and ’40s, it was reestablished on Dec. 19, 1976, and has since continued yearly.
Last year’s count in Greeley consisted of 38 people. There are typically between 50 and 60 species found during the Greeley search, Lightsey said last year.
The Greeley count is one of 53 across Colorado, according to the release.
To participate in this year’s count, contact Lightsey at 970-356-1402 or [email protected]. Beginners to experts are welcome, the release states.
Prior to the turn of the 20th century, many took part in a Christmas tradition known as the “side hunt.” Hunters would split into teams and head out: whichever team shot and killed the most birds was deemed victorious.
In December 1900, Frank Chapman, an Audubon Society founder and editor of Bird-Lore, began the bird count as an alternative to the “side hunt.”
In that first year, 27 people participated at 25 sites, primarily in the northeastern United States.
It has since grown into a nationwide event with more than 83,000 participants at nearly 2,700 sites across the Western Hemisphere. Starting on Dec. 14, volunteers across the country have headed out on local counts. This season’s window ends Jan. 6, according to the release.
