Aleppo, Dec.22 (SANA) Two young engineers from the Faculty of Agriculture at Aleppo University have developed edible cups made from natural ingredients, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic and paper cups commonly used for hot and cold beverages.
Engineers Mohammad al-Shammo and Khaled al-Abdallah told SANA that the cups are produced using simple ingredients including flour, sugar, starch and water, and are designed to allow consumers to drink their beverages and then eat the cup itself, eliminating waste and reducing environmental pollution.
Al-Shammo said the idea emerged after an academic lecture at the faculty highlighted the environmental and health risks associated with plastic and cardboard cups, prompting the team to search for a sustainable and safe alternative.
Al-Abdallah explained that the cups provide a new and safe consumption experience, noting that production has begun in several flavors, including strawberry, coconut, cinnamon and vanilla. He added that the cups are able to withstand hot beverages for up to two hours without losing their structure.
The project was launched in Aleppo, with plans to expand production to other Syrian governorates in the future.The edible cups attracted wide interest from visitors and participants at the Third International Conference on Food Technology, held in Damascus earlier this month under the slogan “Together Towards Sustainable Healthy Food.”
Student Sara al-Hamawi said the idea was innovative and enjoyable, noting that drinking coffee and then eating the cup adds a unique experience, while a child attending the event expressed excitement after drinking juice from a strawberry-flavored cup and eating it afterward.
The engineers said the project offers a safe, environmentally friendly solution that could contribute to reducing harmful waste and promoting sustainable daily consumption practices.
