Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson spoke to media for the first time since his team clinched a playoff berth, and his reaction was exactly what you’d expect.
Johnson and the Bears are now at 11-4 on the regular season, and have already clinched their first playoff berth since the 2020 season.
Now, the Bears have more work to do in the final two weeks of the season, and Johnson said that the team has merely achieved their first goal in a series of accomplishments that they set out to conquer this season.
“Step number one was to get to 11 (wins),” he said. “Step two is we want to win this division. We want to have at least one home playoff game. Step three would be clinching the number one seed. There’s a number of things still out there to play for.”
Johnson and the Bears currently are tied for the second-best record in the NFC with the Los Angeles Rams, and trail the Seattle Seahawks by one game in the standings.
They can secure the NFC North crown, and at least one home playoff game, if they can win one of their final two games, either at the San Francisco 49ers or at home against the Detroit Lions.
If they can get into a tie with the Seahawks and Rams for the best record in the NFC, then it’s still possible that they could secure a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs, but they’ll need some help as the Seahawks finish the season against the Carolina Panthers and the 49ers.
Needless to say, Johnson said there are still things he wants the team to clean up as the season nears its end.
“There’s a number of things we can clean up and get better at,” he said.
That will likely include getting flagged for fewer penalties, as the Bears were hit with 10 penalties for 105 yards in Saturday’s win over Green Bay. The team also had scored only six points on offense heading into the fourth quarter of the game, and Johnson said that he believes the Bears still have another gear they can reach.
“Not a whole lot needs to be said. Those goals are still out there, and we continue pressing forward,” he said. “We’re still not necessarily playing at the level we’re capable of playing at. That’s the beautiful thing about this season.”
