The Kansas City Chiefs are officially leaving Kansas City, Missouri.
According to the Associated Press, the NFL team will relocate across state lines to a brand new stadium in Kansas City, Kansas. The stadium is expected to be ready by the 2031 season.
On Monday, Dec. 22, Kansas lawmakers unanimously agreed to use STAR bonds to fund what is projected to be a $3 billion domed stadium. The funding will be used to cover up to 70% of the cost of the stadium and its accompanying district, with the bonds being paid off with state sales and liquor tax revenues generated in the stadium's surrounding area.
The Chiefs have played at Arrowhead Stadium on the Missouri side of Kansas City since 1972. The team's lease with Jackson County, Missouri is set to expire at the end of the 2031 NFL season — right around the time the new stadium is expected to open.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt — who attended the lawmaking session with team president Mark Donovan and other officials — reflected on the deal in a statement shared Monday.
"Today is an extraordinary day in the history of the Kansas City Chiefs," Hunt said. "We are excited to partner with the State of Kansas to bring a world-class stadium to our fans. This project represents another step in our legacy of innovation and our fan-first mentality, which started with my father, Lamar Hunt. The stadium, practice facility, and surrounding development will benefit the entire region, and further elevate Kansas City in the eyes of the country and the world."
Kansas Gov.Laura Kelly was also expected to share details of the incentive deal in an announcement at 3 p.m. local time, according to The Topeka Capital-Journal. Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas is also expected to address the media later Monday.
The proposed location for the new stadium is in Wyandotte County, Kansas while the new Chiefs headquarters and training facility will be in Olathe, Kansas. The stadium is expected to be about 25 miles west of Arrowhead Stadium, near the Kansas Speedway and a shopping and entertainment district known as The Legends.
