There’s a new Doc Martin to look forward to, and it's called Best Medicine!
For years, fans around the world embraced the charming British comedy TV show Doc Martin, about a grumpy doctor (played by Martin Clunes) suffering from a blood phobia who works in the fictional fishing town of Portwenn in England. The ITV series, created by Dominic Minghella, ran for ten seasons over 18 years from 2004 to 2022.
It followed the abrasive but brilliant doctor’s quirky medical cases and also featured such characters as Martin’s grounded schoolteacher girlfriend-turned-wife Louisa (Caroline Catz), his acerbic aunt Dr. Ruth Ellingham (Dame Eileen Atkins), his outspoken receptionist Morwenna (Jessica Ransom), a silly police officer Joe (John Marquez), hapless handyman/restaurateur Bert (Ian McNeice) and his son Al (Joe Absolom), and the doctor’s dog, Buddy. Doc Martin was so beloved that quaint Port Issac in Cornwall, where the show was filmed, became a popular tourist destination.
Now, a new version of the beloved series called Best Medicine is set to premiere on FOX and viewers hope it will deliver similar warmth, humor, and picturesque scenery.

The hour-long Best Medicine will have a special premiere on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX, following the FOX NFL doubleheader. That is followed by its normal time slot premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
How did Best Medicine come to American TV?
Producer Ben Silverman noted in a FOX press release that Doc Martin “first came to me through my mother and then, separately, through my father. They’re divorced, but both artists with exceptional taste.”
Silverman, known for American remakes of shows from other countries, noted, “I immediately fell in love with Doc Martin, just as I did with the original versions of The Office and Ugly Betty. I know that there had been talks for years about when Doc Martin would come to the U.S., and we knew we needed to take our time to get this right. It is truly rare to find underlying material that so naturally and powerfully translates for an American audience at this specific moment.”

What is the plot of Best Medicine?
According to the network, the first episode will introduce renowned surgeon Dr. Martin Best, who leaves “a lucrative career in Boston to become the general practitioner in the small seaside village of Port Wenn, Maine,” a small East Coast fishing village where he grew up. “One local teacher, Louisa Gavin, questions his harsh demeanor, while Martin quickly gets annoyed by the antics of its town locals, all while hiding his debilitating aversion to blood.”

Fans should rejoice as Martin Clunes, the original Doc Martin, will guest star as Martin’s father, Dr. Robert Best. According to reports, Robert is a snobbish and cold gastroenterologist who joins his son in the town and “is hiding a few secrets of his own that could turn Martin’s new life upside down, and force him to confront his past.”FOX has announced viewers will see the following actors on Best Medicine: Didi Conn (Grease) as councilwoman Geneva Potter, Clea Lewis as pharmacist Sally Mylow, Stephen Spinella and Jason Veasey as the happily married proprietors of The Salty Breeze, Greg Garrison and George Brady, Cindy De La Cruz as the schoolteacher Jeannie, John DiMaggio as the handyman Bert Large, and Carter Shimp as Bert’s son Al Large.

Annie Potts as Aunt Sarah in 'Best Medicine'In an amusing nod to the original series, the teaser has people in the town calling Charles’ character “Doc Martin,” but he corrects them, saying, “Dr. Best, actually.” Dr. Best says, “I find the people here demanding, irrational, and far too chatty at supermarkets.”
With ELO's song “Mr. Blue Sky” used ironically, the doctor’s fear of blood factors into the trailer, and also his sarcastic personality, as he asks a patient who has a suggestion, “Would you like to help me with open heart surgery later?” His aunt (Potts) warns him, “Everybody’s very pissed off with you.” Viewers will see that he asks future girlfriend Louisa (Spencer) for a stool sample!
