SDF Shelling Leaves Dead and Wounded in Aleppo

Two civilians were killed and seven others injured in artillery shelling that Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Aleppo attributed to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) positioned in the al-Ashrafiya and al-Sheikh Maqsood neighborhoods of Aleppo city.

Clashes erupted around the al-Layramoun and Shayhan roundabouts in northern Aleppo today, Monday 22 December, between the Syrian army and the SDF, amid mutual accusations over who initiated the fire.

State run Syrian al-Ikhbariya reported that SDF snipers targeted an Internal Security checkpoint near Shayhan roundabout, noting that gunfire hit the surrounding area.

It added that several Civil Defense personnel were injured after coming under fire near Shayhan roundabout while they were in the vicinity.

Aleppo’s Media Directorate said, in a statement, that Internal Security points near the Shayhan and al-Layramoun roundabouts came under gunfire, injuring several civilians, including two members of the Syrian Civil Defense.

The directorate urged residents in neighborhoods close to the front lines to stay indoors.

It also called on people to avoid passing through the areas around the Shayhan and al-Layramoun roundabouts for the time being, for their safety.

SANA reported that the Gaziantep, Aleppo road was closed from the al-Layramoun and Shayhan roundabouts side, due to gunfire targeting the road that it attributed to SDF forces.

This coincided with clashes around the al-Ashrafiya and al-Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods, with their sounds carrying into other parts of the city.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent said gunfire and shelling were heard in several neighborhoods, including al-Jamilia in central Aleppo, alongside heavy ambulance movement in various areas.

Syria’s Interior Ministry said the SDF forces stationed in al-Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiya “betrayed the Internal Security forces positioned at joint checkpoints,” according to the statement, after a sudden withdrawal and opening fire on the checkpoints, despite existing agreements.

The ministry said this resulted in injuries to one Internal Security member and one army member, in addition to multiple injuries among Civil Defense personnel and civilians.

    Asayish accuses the government

In contrast, the media center of the Internal Security Forces, Asayish, in Aleppo issued a statement announcing that two of its members were injured in an armed attack on a joint checkpoint with Syrian government forces at Shayhan roundabout in northern Aleppo.

The statement said the attack was carried out by a group affiliated with the Defense Ministry of the Syrian government, and left the two members with varying injuries.

In another statement, Asayish said it thwarted an “attempted assault” carried out by factions affiliated with the transitional government in Aleppo today.

It said the attack targeted two of its members while they were performing routine duties at the joint checkpoint with General Security forces near Shayhan roundabout.

“The response was proportionate within the right of legitimate self defense,” Asayish said, while stressing restraint to prevent the clashes from expanding and to protect civilians.

Asayish added it would not stand idly by in the face of attacks or provocations, saying it would take all necessary measures to protect its members and the areas it secures, and to ensure citizens’ safety.

    Civil Defense injuries

The Syrian Civil Defense told Enab Baladi that two of its staff were wounded after coming under direct gunfire, which it attributed to the SDF, while they were carrying out their duties at Shayhan roundabout in Aleppo today.

It said a pickup rescue vehicle belonging to the Civil Defense, carrying four members wearing official uniforms and Civil Defense insignia, came under fire while heading to the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate building in the area.

Two of them were injured and were immediately taken to hospital for treatment.

The Civil Defense said targeting rescue teams is a violation of humanitarian law and obstructs efforts to provide life saving humanitarian services to civilians.

    Military developments after Turkish visit

These field developments came hours after an official Turkish delegation visited Damascus, including Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, accompanied by the defense minister and the head of intelligence.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said the visit aims to follow up on implementation of the March 10 agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF, which is directly linked to Turkish national security priorities.

Fidan warned the SDF last Thursday against any further delay in implementing the agreement to integrate it into the Syrian army, and said the status quo threatens the country’s national unity.

Clashes previously broke out around al-Ashrafiya and al-Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo, controlled by the SDF, on 6 November.

At the time, Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Aleppo said the clashes included exchanges of sniper fire and artillery and mortar shelling that reached civilian areas inside the city.
