Auburn expected to pursue high-profile transfer quarterback, per report

The Auburn Tigers have lost a pair of quarterbacks to the transfer portal in recent weeks but could be on the verge of gaining one back through the portal – as USF’s Byrum Brown reportedly is looking for a new home.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Monday that Brown is transferring away from the Bulls after 4 years in Tampa. Moments later, Chris Hummer reported that Brown is being pursued by Alex Golesh and Auburn.

Brown turned in a pair of 3,000-yard passing seasons at USF, throwing for 3,292 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2023 and then going off for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2025. His 2024 campaign was stifled by a broken leg that sidelined him for most of the season.

In all, Brown passed for 7,690 yards and 61 touchdowns against 19 interceptions in 4 seasons at USF. He will have 1 season of eligibility remaining.

Auburn already lost Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels to the transfer portal, which officially opens Jan. 2. Those departures leave only Deuce Knight and 3-star signee Rhys Brush currently in the Tigers’ quarterback room.

Golesh was hired to replace the fired Hugh Freeze on Nov. 30 after a 3-year stint at USF that saw him go 23-15 overall and 14-10 in American Athletic Conference play.
