A Morgan Rogers brace helped Aston Villa defeat Manchester United 2-1 in the Premier League at Villa Park to extend their exceptional winning streak to 10 games in all competitions.
Aston Villa defeated Manchester United 2-1 at Villa Park on Sunday as they extended their sensational winning run to 10 games in a row in all competitions.
A goal in each half from Morgan Rogers helped Villa to secure 10 competitive wins in a row as a top-flight club for the first time in 111 years, while they also made it seven top-flight league wins in a row for the first time since 1990.
United certainly played their part in an entertaining clash but suffered a huge blow in this match, and potentially beyond, as the influential Bruno Fernandes was forced off injured at half-time.
Much has been said about Aston Villa’s ridiculous scoring feats this season, with Unai Emery’s side outscoring their xG total by 8.0 coming into this clash. They opened the scoring with another wonder-strike in this clash, with arguably their star of the season Rogers netting with a beautiful curler in the 45th minute.
Cutting in from the left flank, Rogers’ right-footed strike from the corner of the box curled over Senne Lammens and continued his fine start to 2025-26.
United fired back quickly, however. Matheus Cunha scored his second goal inside a week for the club, being given the ball inside the box by Patrick Dorgu after the Danish full-back stole the ball off Matty Cash high up the pitch.
Cunha’s side-footed finish came just three minutes and six seconds after Rogers’ opener, and meant that he’s now scored in each of his last three Premier League appearances against Aston Villa (two for Wolves, one for Man Utd).
United came into the match knowing they’d be weakened following a trio of departures in midweek to the Africa Cup of Nations, with Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui representing their respective countries in Morocco for at least the next few weeks.
With Casemiro suspended and Kobbie Mainoo’s injury suffered in training on the eve of this game, Manuel Ugarte was handed his first league start in nearly three months. Ugarte’s inclusion in the United starting XI could maybe have suggested how this game might turn out for the Red Devils, with the Uruguayan losing each of his previous six Premier League starts for the club. He extended that run to seven here, but it would get even worse for Ruben Amorim’s side.
Their captain Fernandes, so reliable during his near-six years at the club, pulled up with a hamstring injury in the 40th minute of the game. He lasted until half-time but was replaced at the break by Lisandro Martínez. Since his debut on 1 February 2020, he’s the only Premier League player to have played 300+ competitive games at club level (308) and has missed just 17 of United’s 325 matches in all competitions since his first appearance.
It took just 13 second-half minutes for Villa to retake the lead, and once again it was Rogers who curled his strike past the despairing Lammens.
His second goal of the game, a week after scoring twice for Villa in their victory at West Ham, took the England international onto 10 Premier League goal involvements for 2025-26, the most of any English player and overtaking Phil Foden (nine).
A seventh successive Premier League victory – something they’d never achieved in the competition previously – means that Aston Villa keep the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the table.
This win, only their second at Villa Park versus United in the Premier League across the last 30 years, takes them onto 36 points, just one off second-place Manchester City and three away from the Gunners in first place.
In only one Premier League season (38 points in 2023-24) have Villa won more after 17 games. Back then they finished the season in fourth place and secured UEFA Champions League football for the first time. Villa fans will be forgiven for having bigger dreams this time around.
