Michigan’s pursuit of a new coach to replace Sherrone Moore continues apace in Ann Arbor, though some of college football’s top names continue to distance themselves from the Wolverines opening.
Kalen DeBoer spent much of the last week actively saying he is happy at Alabama. Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham received a healthy new contract extension from the Sun Devils. But there is still one big-time name out there currently unemployed who would love a shot at a big-time job: Brian Kelly.
FootballScoop reported in a lengthy weekend piece about Michigan’s work trying to replace the tarnished Moore that the former LSU and Notre Dame coach has expressed interest in the Wolverines job. It is unclear, the site reported, if Michigan would have the same interest. But Kelly “has consistently told people close to him and other coaches since he was fired from LSU that he’s ‘got one more (coaching run) in me.’”
Michigan has reportedly told players and their families that its goal is to hire a coach by Christmas, which is critical timing to retain the Wolverines’ existing roster before the transfer portal opens Jan. 2.
Kelly was fired by LSU on Oct. 26 in the middle of his fourth season. He finished with a 34-14 record in Baton Rouge, and is 297-109-2 in his collegiate coaching career. Moore was fired by Michigan on Dec. 10 after it was revealed he was engaged in an extramarital affair with a staffer.
