ROCHESTER, N.Y.
A cold front dropped through Western New York early Sunday morning ushering in wind, colder temperatures, and some brief flakes through Rochester. Winds were seen gusting up to 53 mph in some spots (Batavia and Warsaw) through the very early hours of Sunday morning. The rest of the region has been seeing gusts between 40 and 50 mph.
Expect a cold start for Sunday morning with temperatures in the mid-20s and feels-like temperatures well into the lower teens. We remain green on the threat tracker, due to a slowly decreasing trend in wind gusts through the day. Sustained winds will stay between 15 to 25 mph out of the west, shifting to the northwest through the day with gusts between 30 and 40 mph. We can expect the high temperature for Sunday to stay in the 20s with a forecasted high of 29 degrees.
Shallow moisture will limit accumulations from the lake effect bands on the backside of the cold front. However, some brief lake bands may drop south on Sunday starting around dinnertime. Eastern Wayne County spends some extra time in these snow bands, so locations around Sodus Point may pick up 2 to 4 inches by Monday morning. The Rochester region will wake up Monday morning to 0.5″ to an inch (along the Lake Ontario shoreline) at most.
Any lingering lake snow should clear out of the Rochester metro region by Monday morning’s rush hour. Monday will consist of partly cloudy skies with the high temperature forecasted at 34 degrees. The daytime will stay mainly dry with snow showers expected to enter the Buffalo metro area around the evening rush hour. Rochester should stay clear of snow showers through the evening commute. Shortly after, scattered snow showers will move into Rochester through the evening on Monday. This snow has the potential to change over to a wintry-mix Tuesday morning. Additional snow accumulations with this system may include 1-2 inches for the general Rochester area.
As of late Sunday morning, recent data shows that temperatures may be favorable to hold on to at least an inch of snow heading into Christmas morning. Tuesday morning’s precipitation is leaning toward more snow than rain. Wednesday will feature dry weather with temperatures topping out in the mid to upper 30s. We are still tracking the potential for some rain for Christmas, but the exact timing and placement of this precipitation (how far north it will stretch) has yet to be determined.
