Internal Security Forces affiliated with Syria’s Interior Ministry, working with the General Intelligence Directorate, carried out what the ministry described as a well coordinated security operation in Daraya, southwest of Damascus, on Sunday, 21 December, targeting an Islamic State group site.
The operation led to the arrest of the cell leader and six other members, and the seizure of various weapons and ammunition that authorities said were prepared for use in “terrorist” activities, according to Ahmad al-Dalati, head of Internal Security in Damascus countryside.
Al-Dalati added, as cited by the Syrian Interior Ministry on its Facebook page, that Internal Security Forces also confiscated weapons, ammunition, and funds that were intended to finance “terrorist” activities. He said the items were seized and transferred to the relevant authorities to take legal action.
The cell leader and the six detainees were referred to the Counterterrorism Department to complete investigations before being brought before the judiciary, the ministry said.
The ministry said the operation followed intelligence leads and sustained monitoring of the cell’s movements over recent weeks, which resulted in the cell being fully dismantled.
Al-Dalati said the operation was carried out with a high level of planning and precision, and with full adherence to precautionary measures to ensure civilian safety. He added that it reflects coordination between security and intelligence units and their ability to dismantle Islamic State cells.
A cell dismantled in Kanakir
Syrian Interior Ministry security units, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate, carried out a security operation targeting an Islamic State group site in Kanakir, in the Qatana area of Damascus countryside, southwest of Damascus.
In a statement posted on the Interior Ministry’s Facebook page on 3 December, al-Dalati said the operation was based on “reliable” intelligence and close monitoring of the group’s movements over recent weeks.
Security units took full control of the site after what he described as a limited confrontation. The operation resulted in the arrest of three individuals linked to the group’s cells, and the seizure of ready to use explosive devices, silencers, various weapons, and large quantities of ammunition.
The statement added that documents and evidence were also found indicating the suspects’ involvement in activities described as “terrorist.” Al-Dalati said the materials are being analyzed and investigations are ongoing.
Operations against the Islamic State group
On 8 November, Syria’s Interior Ministry announced the launch of a “large scale” security operation in several governorates aimed at pursuing Islamic State cells, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba said the operation included 61 raids across multiple governorates and resulted in 71 arrests, including leaders at different levels and other members accused of committing various crimes, including targeting civilians and Defense Ministry personnel.
He added that the operation also resulted in one Islamic State member being killed and one security member being injured, in addition to raids on weapons and ammunition stores and hideouts containing logistical equipment in several areas.
The operation covered Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Homs, Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, Damascus and its countryside, and the Syrian desert region.
Rising Islamic State activity
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for two assassinations in Homs and Hama on 28 November.
The group said on its “Saah al-Wagha” platform that its fighters targeted what it described as “a candidate of the former Syrian regime,” alongside a member of the new government, in the al-Tatan neighborhood, killing the first and wounding the second, according to the group’s account.
It also said its fighters shot and killed a former member of what it described as “Rafidite militias” in al-Mazraa village in rural Homs.
The group also announced three operations in what it called “Wilayat al-Khayr” (Deir Ezzor Governorate), saying it killed a government member it described as a spy in al-Bukamal, near the Iraqi border, and targeted two members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
In its al-Naba newspaper on 27 November, the group said its fighters killed what it called a spy for the “Syrian regime” and wounded two members of what it described as the “PKK militia,” damaging two vehicles in three separate operations.
The group also claimed it assassinated what it called “a spy for the apostate Syrian regime” in al-Bukamal, alleging that the person had previously been an SDF member before leaving recently and becoming a spy for the current authorities. It claimed he used his work selling auto spare parts to track the group’s movements and report their routes and
