With news that Frank Nazar is expected to miss four weeks because of the injury he suffered in Saturday afternoon’s loss, the Blackhawks are now in an incredibly tough spot. They were already struggling to create offense without Connor Bedard. Now, their two most dynamic offensive players are going to miss an extended period of time.
The good news: Nick Lardis found the back of the net on Saturday. His first career NHL goal showed off the hands that make him an exciting prospect for the Blackhawks. He didn’t get much ice time in the game Saturday, but it’s going to be hard for the Blackhawks to not put him on the ice moving forward with Bedard and Nazar out for a while.

— NHL (@NHL) December 20, 2025 Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill was asked about the fact that, even with Nazar out since early in the first period, Lardis barely got on the ice. He only skated two shifts in the third period, and only got back on the ice once in the almost 13 minutes of game time after he scored. Speaking of Bedard and a potential return, Ben Pope shared some more comments from Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson. This piece focused primarily on Bedard’s injury and return (though there’s more in here about Alex Vlasic and Sam Rinzel). Here’s part of what Davidson told Ben about Bedard’s timeline to return:“We’re going to get through the Christmas break and see how he’s feeling, because it very much is [about] ‘see how the player is feeling,’” Davidson said. “It’s not like a broken bone where you can go in and image it and [know] if it’s healed, yes or no? It’s much more [about] his ability to perform and do what he needs to do on the ice as a hockey player.
“It’s not a firm timeline, but I don’t think it’s something that [can have] a firm timeline, just because we have to see how it heals up.”
Connor Bedard’s recovery timeline will be determined by how he feels, not by any imaging or tests, Kyle Davidson says.“It’s much more [about] his ability to perform and do what he needs to do on the ice.”Details: t.co/pS6AVHGNxI
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 20, 2025 I also want to take a moment to shout out Ryan Greene. I know he was my No. 2 star for the Blackhawks last night, but his performance in unexpected circumstances deserves another look. He skated 22:46 — the highest of any forward on Chicago’s roster. He took 26 faceoffs — the most of any Blackhawks skater. At 5-on-5 his expected Goals For was 0.65, which led Blackhawks forwards. He was credited with three hits, one takeaway and one blocked shot to go with his two shots on net and two assists. He spent over four minutes on the penalty kill and also skated 2:26 on the power play. Without Bedard and Nazar available, his role is going to be elevated — and his production is going to become more important. It might be time for the Blackhawks to consider breaking up Artyom Levshunov and Matt Grzelcyk. They were on the ice together for 14:52 at 5-on-5 on Saturday, during which the Senators had a 22-8 shot attempt advantage, 11-3 shots for advantage and out-scored the Blackhawks 3-0. Their expected goals for was 0.11. Their expected goals against was 1.00. Not a good game.NHL GameScore Impact Card for Chicago Blackhawks on 2025-12-20: pic.twitter.com/FaCzip6mfk
— HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) December 20, 2025 The IceHogs hung a big, crooked number on the Moose in Manitoba last night. Sam Rinzel had three assists, Joey Anderson scored short-handed and on the power play and Samuel Savoie scored a goal and had an assist in a 7-3 win. Maybe most importantly, Laurent Brossoit stopped 40 of 43 shots in the game. With the NHL’s roster freeze in effect, there were two noteworthy injuries this past week. The first could be something to watch one the roster freeze lifts after Christmas with regards to Brossoit. After starting — and winning (in spite of an .889 save percentage) — three games with the Oilers, Tristan Jarry is already on IR. Edmonton thought they maybe had a bandaid for that gaping wound on their roster… and then this. The second came, unfortunately, on Friday night. Seth Jarvis was in bad shape after crashing into the goal in Carolina’s game against the Panthers. Jarvis had 19 goals in 32 games to start the season. Carolina is off to a great start, but losing him is a big blow.Rod Brind'Amour tells @hannaRyates post-game, "It's not good. He's going to be out for a while." t.co/PncrqtId2a
— Walt Ruff (@WaltRuff) December 20, 2025 With Phillip Danault getting traded back to Montreal, I dusted off this beauty from a few years ago. A Blackhawks trade tree that starts with drafting Denis Savard in 1980 and brings us all the way to having Frank Nazar in the lineup for the Blackhawks now. In between, we have deals including such Blackhawks legends as Chris Chelios, Jaroslav Špaček, Troy Brouwer and Kirby Dach. Now seems like a good time to revisit the ridiculous, winding #Blackhawks trade tree that includes Phillip Danault It starts with Denis Savard And (as of now) ends w/ Frank Nazar Yes, from Savard to Nazar is all connected t.co/nCCCZTxamA

Since the NCAA opened their doors to CHL players, there has been increasing pressure on all involved parties. When they opened Pandora’s box with NIL? We are truly in uncharted waters with regards.I spent several months talking to dozens of coaches and GMs from across the CHL and NCAA for @TheAthletic.Inside the tense Cold War brewing between the two sides: t.co/AGlBQVKYCq
— Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) December 20, 2025 The Sabres are really going to work overhauling their front office. First, the Sabres announced associate GM Jason Karmanos was fired on Saturday. David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported Marc Bergevin is leaving his gig with the Kings to be an associate GM with the new regime in Buffalo. Pierre LeBrun also reported last night that the Sabres asked the Blue Jackets for permission to speak with AGM Josh Flynn, and that permission was granted.Hearing Marc Bergevin is leaving the LA Kings and joining the front office team of Buffalo Sabres – I believe as Associate GM.
