The 10 Best Christmas Finds at Publix, According to a Superfan

When the holiday season rolls around, there’s one treat I can’t wait to enjoy: Santa’s White Christmasice cream at Publix. The limited-time dessert is flavored with the iconic coconut-flavored coffee from Barnie's Coffee & Tea in Winter Park, FL, which is one of my favorite holiday foods. Growing up in Florida, my palate was trained on Barnie’s. The popular coffee roaster is famous for its whimsical flavored blends—French Vanilla Dream, Sweetheart Blend—but none captured me like Santa’s White Christmas. My mother once received a bag of the fancy flavored ground coffee in a holiday gift basket and let me sneak sips from her mug.By the time I reached high school, I was brewing my own pots, fully hooked on those cozy notes of caramel, coconut and vanilla. For a Floridian, it was about as close as you could get to experiencing a white Christmas. As an adult, my coffee preferences skew more single-origin than flavored, but every December, my heart still pitter-patters when Publix rolls out its limited-edition Santa’s White Christmas ice cream. The Barnie's coffee notes and cocoa-espresso flakes deliver the nostalgia I crave this time of year. That ice cream may be what gets me through the doors, but it’s not why I stay. Publix bursts with holiday cheer—from the balloons and poinsettias at the entrance to the seasonal treats tucked into the deli, there are so many ways the fan-favorite grocery store can help make your festive feasts and jolly parties so much better.Whether you're making the entire meal from scratch, want a little (or a lot of) help pulling together your holiday meals and celebrations, or are just looking for some fun and festive foods to add to your cart, Publix can lend a hand. Here are my 10 must-buy Christmas items at Publix this year.Related: The 10 Best Things To Buy at Publix, According to a Superfan

3 Tips for Shopping at Publix During the Holidays

Navigating the holidays is stressful enough, so make your grocery run a little easier by visiting Publix on a Wednesday or Thursday. That’s when their weekly sales begin (check your local store online or in the app), meaning you’re more likely to catch a BOGO, plus you’ll avoid the weekend crowds.

    2. Order ahead

Publix also streamlines holiday hosting with prepared meals and platters, like a full turkey dinner with sides or a fruit-and-cheese tray, all available to order ahead. Procrastinators take note: The lead time is refreshingly short, too, with some items requiring only one to two days’ notice.

    3. Seek out the holiday section

Not every Publix location is set up the same, but more likely than not, yours probably has a station with all of the holiday supplies you could imagine. Running late to a party and forgot to wrap a gift? There’s wrapping paper and gift bags.

Want a cute piece of decor for the office? You might need a mini gingerbread house. Holiday baking? Here are all the sprinkles and icings you could need. It’s nice not to have to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the store to find these items during this already rushed time of year.

    1. Candy Cane Coated Almonds

Hiding in the nuts and dried fruit section, you’ll find candy cane flavored almonds. The red and white speckled treats have a thick coating that delivers a peppermint punch up front, before giving way to the crunchy almond inside. These little treats are great for putting out in a candy dish, adding to a dessert board or stashing in your desk drawer so you're ready when the snack cravings hit. Try to have just one—I dare you.

    2. Holiday Ice Cream

For serving in a cup or cone, alongside a slice of cake or blended into a milkshake, Publix has limited-edition ice cream flavors you won’t want to miss. As I've already mentioned, the coffee-and-coconut Santa’s White Christmas is my #1 pick, but there are so many amazing options.

You can go for Peppermint Stick (classic vanilla with pieces of peppermint candy), Eggnog, or, if you're an ice cream maximalist, you might want to opt for Marshmallow, Candy Cane & Cookie Blast (marshmallow ice cream, candy cane bits and chocolate cookie swirl).

If you're looking to branch out and try some new flavors, Publix added Coffee Chai Latte (with cookie pieces) and Rum Nut Bread Pudding to their holiday ice cream lineup.

the cutest Christmas cake to take to your next get together! Ordering was easy, I just went to the Publix website and typed in “merry christmas cake” under cakes and they pulled right up! #christmascakes

The Publix bakery offers an amazing array of beautifully decorated cakes throughout the year, but they really step it up during the holiday season. One classic example? The Christmas Book Cake, a treat that resembles an open vintage book with a cozy, glowing candle decoration on one side and your message on the other. If you only need cake for a few people, you can get the Christmas Tree Mini Cake, which features cheerfully decorated Christmas trees and broad white and red stripes.

On the more modern side, the supermarket chain went viral this year with their new pink-hued Merry Birthday Cake that offers a cheery holiday vibe with blue swag, green ruffles and bows, plus a collection of tiny Santa hats made of frosting on top. You can get a two-tiered or mini version of the cake to celebrate a December birthday—or you can just order the cute cake sans birthday message and bring a little extra cheer to your holiday party.

    4. Publix Cranberry Cinnamon Goat Cheese

As far as I'm concerned, no holiday cheeseboard is complete without the cranberry cinnamon-crusted goat cheese log from Publix. It’s a sweet, savory and slightly tangy combination that's delicious spread on crackers or bagel chips.

I love the pop of color and tangy flavor it adds to a cheese plate. You can leave it whole and let people dig in or slice it into rounds to show off the contrast between the pale cheese and the colorful coating. Pro tip: You’ll find it in the deli section with the rest of the specialty cheeses.

    Cranberry orange relish ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ #publix

I’m the type of holiday cook who likes to invest my energy into a couple of great from-scratch dishes—typically the protein, a couple of sides and a decadent dessert—and then balance it out with pre-made items from the store. Publix has so many great store-brand sides and add-ons that help round out my meal.

One of my go tos is the cranberry orange relish, which is the perfect counterpoint to all the rich holiday food. While it’s not a complicated side to make, the Publix deli section makes it that much easier by letting you pick up a pre-made version. It tastes so fresh, everyone will think it’s homemade anyway. Serve the tangy sauce with your big holiday meals, spread it on a sandwich, add it to a grazing board or even stir some into your morning yogurt or oatmeal.

    6. Scalloped Potatoes Mornay With Leeks

    Publix

Again, why not take one more thing off your to-do list? Publix’s scalloped potatoes are rich, creamy, and savory—a perfect addition to the holiday table. The package, which you can find in the deli section, serves up to eight people and all you have to do is pop it in the oven (or microwave).

The combination of red skin potatoes in and Asiago and Swiss cheese sauce can stand up to hearty mains, like prime rib and ham, but is also great with a roast turkey, if you're a Christmas poulty family.

Publix offers its deli platters year-round, but they’re super handy during the holidays because no party or gathering is complete without a little nosh. And really, who wants to dice their own cheese cubes or slice that many apples? Make things easier on yourself by ordering a pretty platter of pre-made snacks.

If you're having a laid-back afternoon party or need to feed long weekend guests, you can get an assortment of subs. The chicken tenders are a classic, but it's hard to go wrong with an Italian or chicken Parm sub. If you're looking for something a little fancier, you can get an artfully arranged charcuterie box packed with Asiago and Gouda cheeses alongside salami and olives. The assortment of meats, cheeses and fruits is packed on its own platter, so all you have to do it lift it out of the box and put it on the table. Appetizer done!

    8. Turkey Cranberry Pinwheels

    Publix

Sure, the holidays are all about celebrations, but there are also lots of non-holiday meals you have to eat this month, and you often don't have much time for them. For those moments, these cute little turkey pinwheels come in clutch.

They’re sold in a four-pack, making them the ideal grab-and-go meal, whether you're rushing from one holiday concert to the next, prepping for a party, doing some last-minute shopping or chilling on the couch for a holiday movie marathon. The combo of meaty turkey and tangy cranberry gives off a festive vibe, the red-and-green color scheme is on point for this time of year and there's something about a pinwheel that says "party."

Not all store-bought eggnog is worth seeking out, but Publix’s version of the iconic holiday drink strikes the right balance between delicious and affordable. It’s thick and creamy with a custardy texture and a classic eggnog flavor with notes of nutmeg. It’s particularly great heated up on a cool winter night or splashed into coffee (we won’t tell if you slip some rum in, too).

    Courtesy Lia Picard

I'm a big fan of the Publix floral department. Throughout the year, I'll often pick up bouquets for my house or order flowers ahead for special occasions. When the holidays roll around, the floral section is full of seasonal delights, like beautiful poinsettia and Christmas cacti. They’re sold in festive containers, which is great whether you’re looking to decorate for a party at your place or need a hostess gift in a pinch.
