Colin Jost was in the hot seat during Saturday Night Live’s annual Christmas episode. On the Dec. 20 episode of the NBC sketch comedy series, Jost was under the impression that he and his “Weekend Update” co-host Michael Che would skip their year-end tradition of writing offensive jokes for one another to read live on air.
But Che surprised his longtime co-star by giving him several jokes to read—including a shocking joke about Jost’s wife, Scarlett Johansson.
When Che told Jost he had written some jokes for him to read, Jost replied, “That's interesting, because you specifically said that we were not doing it this year. I did not write any jokes for you."
Jost reluctantly read a racist joke about civil rights-inspired coins, an inappropriate joke about victims of church sexual abuse, and an offensive joke about Johansson.
“New research shows that millions of women leave the workforce due to menopause. Which means there’s only a couple years left on my gravy train,” Jost was forced to read as a photo of his 41-year-old wife flashed onscreen. “My girl already be like, ‘Colin, I’m warm. Colin, I’m sweating.’ B----, you having a hot flash.”
Jost then said he had a “backup”. “They don’t call Wednesday hump day for nothing,” he said as a photo of Jenna Ortega’s Netflix character, Wednesday Addams, appeared onscreen.
Fans reacted to the one-sided joke swap on social media, with some saying they hope Jost would be able to get “revenge” later in the season.
“Omg Che did him so dirty,” one fan wrote in a YouTube comment.
“This is the best bit they do all year, why would you not do half of it?” another wanted to know.
“That was great, but I look forward to seeing them get each other every year. This was only half a present,” another fan chimed in.
“Maybe they didn’t realize this tradition is was SNL fans look forward to all year? What a fail!” another wrote on Instagram.
"I feel cheated, we are owed 3 more jokes,“ another wrote on YouTube.
Jost once shared that the joke swap was a “terrifying” bit.
During a 2024 appearance on Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi, he explained, “It's kind of crazy. There's just not a lot of live television in the world anymore. So the idea that you're on live television and you have to say something and you don't know what it is, that's pretty crazy, and it's not usually gentle."
"I'm someone who can also be really in my head a lot of times, and it definitely gets you out of your head," the comedian added of the annual year-end joke swap, which started in December 2018.
