Bowen Yang paid a tearful goodbye to Saturday Night Live. Days after announcing his exit from the NBC late-night comedy series, the comedian appeared in several sketches during the Saturday Night Live Christmas episode on Dec. 20. But his final scene, in a sketch titled “Delta Lounge,” left Yang—and the audience—emotional.
In the final SNL sketch of the night, Yang played a Delta Airlines lounge employee working his last shift managing the eggnog machine. Guest host Ariana Grande played his wife, who called him to tell him to please come home for Christmas.
“This is my last shift," Yang’s character said. "It’s sad, I’m going to miss everything about this place, the way it smells, the celebrities that come through. Just last week, Josh O’Connor was here.”
When Grande showed up wearing a short gray wig and a Christmas sweater, she told Yang, “I wouldn’t miss your last shift for the world.”
Yang, clearly talking about his seven years on SNL, then said, “I just feel so lucky that I ever got to work here, and I just wanted to enjoy it a little bit longer. It’s definitely the people, I’ve loved every single person that works here because they’ve done so much for me, especially my boss.”
The boss in the sketch was not SNL boss Lorne Michaels, but instead musical guest Cher. “My success I have after this will be thanks to this place,” Yang said to the music legend. “This place will always be home.”
After asking his boss for feedback, Cher told him that everyone thought he was "a little bit too gay". “But you know what? You’re perfect for me,” Cher said as she hugged him tightly.
Yang, Grande, and Cher then tearfully sang the ending to the song “Please Come Home for Christmas.”
Fans had a big reaction to Yang’s SNL goodbye.
“Watching this live, I genuinely got emotional. Bowen, you have no idea how much we will miss you,” one fan wrote on YouTube.
“Wow. Loved Bowen saying goodbye with Ariana and Cher by his side. What a way to end things,” another wrote.
“Not me crying hard, Bowen, you are now a proud SNL legendary cast member! a third fan added.
“Never have I cried from watching SNL. [Bowen Yang] you will be deeply missed, but I can’t wait to see you soar,” another wrote.
“This is my last shift…?,” another wrote, adding a crying emoji.
Hours before the live show aired on NBC, Yang posted to Instagram to thank everyone he worked with during his seven years on Saturday Night Live. “Thank you to Ari for sending me off in the dreamiest way I could imagine,” he added of his Wicked co-star Grande.
Yang had one more dream come true on the night of his SNL goodbye. The actor previously told The Kelly Clarkson Show that Cher was his dream guest for Saturday Night Live, which made his final scene even more special.
