College football fans, media berate CFP format as Oregon routs James Madison

At least the 41-10 win for Ole Miss over Tulane earlier in the day was competitive for a bit. The Rebels had just a 17-3 lead at the halftime break.

Oregon had a 20-3 lead on James Madison just 20 minutes into the game. The Ducks scored touchdowns on each of their first 5 possessions. None of those drives needed more than 5 plays to score, and all of them covered more than 60 yards.

As 5-seed Oregon built a 34-6 halftime lead over the champions of the Sun Belt, the internet decided this year’s opening round of the College Football Playoff marked the official end of the Group of 5’s inclusion in the field.

Because Duke beat Virginia to swipe the ACC title, both James Madison and Tulane made their way into the field. Tulane lost by 31. James Madison trailed by 28 after 30 minutes. Oregon averaged 14.4 yards per play and had more points than plays run in the first half.

Very few enjoyed the show. LSU coach Lane Kiffin shot off a sarcastic quip about the level of entertainment. On3’s Ari Wasserman stated that the G5 should still have access, but they shouldn’t have a guaranteed spot in the field for the highest-ranked champion.

Remember, Boise State, last year’s G5 representative, lost to Penn State in its first game, 31-14.

Others simply called for something to change with the format going forward.

It might be difficult to eliminate the automatic berth for the Group of 5 without eliminating guarantees for other leagues. And there will be those at the power conference level who won’t support a format without any protections.

What is clear is this: No one, except Oregon fans, enjoyed the first half of the CFP nightcap on TNT.

This is a joke. Hope you CFB hipsters had fun for the last month. Oregon’s second stringers in practice are better than this team. I did expect some fight from this JMU defense but this is unfair. They look tiny and slow

The G5 thing is stupid because this isn't basketball where a team can get hot. These major upsets will never happen in football. Size, athleticism, depth. A G5 team will never match that with these schools.

    — Jason Scheer (@jasonscheer) December 21, 2025

Say it with me: G5 teams do not belong in the college football playoff. It’s embarrassing.

    — Tiger Vibes (@Tiger__Vibes) December 21, 2025

I know everyone has to have an opinion about the G5's inclusion in the CFP, so here's mine kind of stolen from @KayceSmith: G5 teams should be included in the system, but not guaranteed a spot. If it has a team that makes it into the top 12, great. Like Cincinnati a few years ago…

College football ain’t college basketball. This is what happens to the little guy in football.I hate it. I wish it were different. It ain’t.And miss me with the Tennessee-OhioState talk. Not even close to the same thing.

I kinda feel bad for James Madison, but at the same time, I don't want Oregon to take its foot off the gas. We can't have this again. It's trash.

Let’s take two September body bag games and call them CFP games. What could go wrong?

Everything the NCAA touches turns to .

    — ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) December 21, 2025

Tulane & James Madison doing everything they can to make sure no G5 schools ever make the CFP again, and for that they should be commended.

    — Barry (@BarryOnHere) December 21, 2025

The year, the G5 died….And I was singing bye bye playoff G5

    — Tone Digs (@ToneDigz) December 21, 2025

The stakeholders will not be allowing these unqualified G5 participants in again. Like it or not, this is bad for business.
