Junior Alabama cross country runner Doris Lemngole won The Bowerman award, the highest individual honor given out in collegiate track and field, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday night. She is the first in school history and the first Kenyan runner to win the award.
“It’s a great honor,” Lemngole said. “Representing my country is such a great motivation, not only for me but also for young athletes.”
The award is emphatic punctuation for a historic campaign, which saw her finish with national titles in the indoor 5,000-meter and the outdoor 3,000m steeplechase; a national runner-up finish in the indoor 3,000m; and SEC titles in the indoor 3,000m, outdoor 3,000m steeplechase and the outdoor 5,000m. She was also the USTFCCCA National Women’s Athlete of the Year.
In her acceptance speech, Lemngole thanked Alabama cross country head coach Dan Waters and assistant Nick Stenuf, who coaches the female athletes. Beyond those two, she added, “To my teammates, thank you for making every day better and every mile worth it.”
After giving thanks to the people in her support system, she talked about the significance of the sport itself in her life, touching on how it has molded her as a person.
“Running has shaped who I am. I started this sport simply because I love it, and along the way, it taught me resilience, patience and confidence,” she said.
Stenuf was asked about what it meant for international athletes like Lemgnole to see her take home the award, and what motivation they should derive from it.
“Keep dreaming big. Don’t let anyone step in your way,” he said. “Keep fighting for your goals.”
Lemgnole finished by praising the program she has now been a part of for three years, saying it has been “an incredible honor” and “represented everything I worked for.”
