It turned out that two of rock’s biggest names were quietly fans of the smooth sounds of The Carpenters.
In an interview with Goldmine Magazine, Richard Carpenter revealed that The Beatles members Paul McCartney and John Lennon were great fans of the band and the voice of Richard's sister, Karen Carpenter. Richard shared an experience that he and Karen had with the legendary singers and songwriters, where their fandom came up in conversation.
"Well, we were touring the U.K. in ’74, and we got a message from [Paul McCartney] that he was recording with his brother, actually. They were recording the Mike McGear album."
He continued, "And he asked if we would like to stop by? So, of course, we’d like to stop by. So we stopped by (laughs) and just watched him with his brother Mike. And then after a while, excused ourselves because, of course, they were busy, but it was really nice of him to ask. Paul complimented us and said some really nice things about Karen’s singing, too."
In a separate instance, Richard said that Karen received a message from John Lennon. "She and her beau were heading into a particular restaurant in Beverly Hills. John was coming out, and in passing, John said something to Karen, 'a lovely voice, luv' or 'a beautiful or a great voice, luv,' and Karen was flabbergasted."
He continued, "I spoke with her and said, 'Karen, of course, all these people are going to tell you that you’re great because you are a great singer!' I don’t think she ever realized just how damn great she was."
The Carpenters covered three Beatles songs
The Carpenters famously covered The Beatles' "Ticket to Ride," making it their debut single in 1969. However, instead of the harder edge the Fab Four were known for, Karen Carpenter's softer vocal style transformed the pop-rock track into a melancholy ballad.
Karen and Richard also recorded a soulful version of "Help!" Their performance of the song was captured in a clip by BBC Four.
Finally, the Carpenters added their own twist to a Beatles cover of The Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman." That recording was made in 1975.
The Carpenters’ music reached fans of every genre. Even rock legends couldn’t help singing along, proving that a great song truly transcends boundaries.
