Newcastle 2-2 Chelsea Stats: Blues Battle Back as Magpies Squander Yet Another Lead

Eddie Howe’s men have dropped the joint-most points from winning positions in the Premier League this term. Look back on an engrossing duel with the best facts and Opta data in our Newcastle vs Chelsea stats page.

Chelsea battled back from two down to earn a 2-2 Premier League draw at Newcastle on Saturday, with Eddie Howe’s side dropping points from a winning position yet again.

For the majority of the first half at St. James’ Park, there looked to be no doubt that Newcastle were going to emphatically put last weekend’s derby defeat behind them.

The hosts were dominant and found themselves 2-0 up at half-time thanks to a Nick Woltemade brace – the German finding the right net after his own goal gifted Sunderland all three points last week.

But Chelsea, who’d lost 10 of their previous 11 league games in which they trailed by two or more goals at half-time, fought back brilliantly by the 66th minute thanks to goals from Reece James and João Pedro.

That was as far as their comeback went, but considering their predicament at half-time, Chelsea and Enzo Maresca will likely feel this was a good point rather than two dropped.

Newcastle, however, saw their inconsistency hold them back once again, their 13 points dropped from winning positions now the joint most in the Premier League this term.

Kings of the fast start, Newcastle wasted little time in trying to prove a point from last week’s derby disappointment, scoring for the eighth time – more than any other club – in the opening five minutes of a match since the start of last season.

Anthony Gordon managed to test Robert Sánchez from close range following Jacob Murphy’s cross, and Woltemade was there to smash home the rebound.

Newcastle enjoyed relentless pressure at times in the early exchanges and were good value for their second goal in the 20th minute as Woltemade steered in Gordon’s pinpoint cross.

Curiously, that made him just the fourth Newcastle player in Premier League history to score twice in the opening 20 minutes of a league game at St. James Park, and he’ll have been disappointed not to get a first-half hat-trick when turning another Gordon cross just over on the stroke of half-time.

Needless to say, however, this was a completely different Newcastle performance to the one produced at the Stadium of Light; their six Opta-defined ‘big chances’ was their most in the first half of a league game since March 2020.

Similarly, the 1.97 non-penalty expected goals conceded by Chelsea was their most in the first 45 of a league game since December 2023 – everything was going Newcastle’s way.

Typically, then, Chelsea began the second half with a vengeance.

James’ gorgeous free-kick three minutes after the restart got them back within touching distance, and they nearly equalised a few minutes later when Pedro Neto forced Aaron Ramsdale into a fine save.

Ramsdale was helpless just past the hour, though.

Sánchez’s kick from his hands found the isolated João Pedro inside the Newcastle half, and the Brazilian headed the ball beyond Malick Thiaw – who slipped – for himself to run on to before coolly slotting in his first league goal since 8 November.

For all the gusto and scrappiness of both sides in the closing stages, however, there were only really half chances created during an otherwise engrossing final stanza.

A lack of quality when it truly mattered came to plague both sides as they traded blows in an end-to-end finish, the draw probably a fair outcome.
