ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police Chief David Smith provided an update Saturday morning regarding a police-involved shooting that occurred on Chili Avenue near Thurston Road Friday night.

Three officers were shot. All were hit in their upper bodies and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment, and are expected to survive.

RPD says one officer was shot multiple times, but his vest absorbed most of the impact. Another officer underwent surgery and remains in critical condition. Smith says the third officer, shot near Arnett Boulevard and Thurston Road, returned fire, hitting the suspect.

Smith says these are the risks officers take every time they clock in, close to a holiday or not.

“We’re a 24/7 operation 365 days a year even on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day. We’re going to be here. It’s what we do. It’s what we signed up for. I have to say everyone is in good spirits as we can expect,” Smith said.

The suspect’s identity has not been released. When asked if the suspect was known to police, Chief Smith said it is still under investigation.

Rochester Police Department stated that all three officers involved have been with the department for less than ten years.

This marks the fourth officer-involved shooting in Rochester this year. Chief Smith says that the body-worn camera footage will be released.
