Anthony Joshua got his ugly win over Jake Paul, now let’s never do this again

KASEYA CENTER — At five to midnight in Miami, Anthony Joshua finally connected with a clean punch to knockout Jake Paul. It was a relief, it was also round six.

Joshua chased, wrestled, pushed and hunted Paul over every inch of the 22-foot ring for nearly six completed rounds. It was both ugly, desperate at times and in the end, painful for Paul.

“I got the job done, that is all that matters,” insisted Joshua. “He was in survival mode, I had to take my time.”

It is doubtful if everybody will agree with him – Paul was reluctant and only slowed with exhaustion, not from Joshua’s fists. That was Joshua’s plan, a slow attritional approach to breaking down the novice. It worked, but it was not always pretty.

It was strange to watch as Paul shuffled from corner to corner, occasionally trying a hopeful right and often claiming Joshua, who remained calm at Paul’s spoiling tactics. Paul was bundled over in an ugly rolling mess 10 or more times; it was not a good spectacle to watch, but nobody cared.

The fight existed under a canopy of assumptions; it was a hoax, a fix, a disgrace, a carnival, the end of boxing.

In the end, it was none of those things. It was just an old-fashioned mismatch. It was only ever going to be a mismatch; nothing sinister, just one man letting his delusions take over.

The cold and harsh finish will hopefully end all theories about the fight being choreographed and fixed. Paul was out when he went down, but did struggle to regain his feet. The punch probably broke his jaw.

In many ways, a day before the fight, the laughter stopped in Miami and Joshua flicked the switch; Paul saw the moment and went full clown at the ceremonial weigh-in. It was panic, not comedy. He continued that same excessive bravado tactic during the ring walk and once the first bell tolled. It was, he realised, simply a fight too far.

Joshua had masked his feelings all week, hidden behind a wide smile and a zillion fist pumps. However, at the final face-to-face, the nasty Joshua arrived, and he is a mean fighter.

He has never denied his ferocious side, the side that allows him to enjoy hurting men in the boxing ring.

Paul realised right then that it was not a game; luckily it took Joshua four rounds to get close to finding his range. Paul was exhausted at that point, the end inevitable.

Then the action switched to the corridors and backstage dressing rooms and the question of a fight with Tyson Fury next year.

It’s closer than it has been in recent years right now; that could just mean that two people have spoken, agreed on a month, a location. It is obvious that there are still many complicated dances to dance before the first bell in September or October. “We’re very deep into negotiations at the moment,” admitted Eddie Hearn.

In the days before the Miami fight, Fury was screaming abuse at Joshua and Joshua was laughing off the latest rants. In all fairness, that has been their only ever method of communication. “It’s time to stop talking now,” said Joshua at the end. “Let’s fight. It’s time.”

It was not a boxing apocalypse in Miami, but that was a genuine threat in some ways. Paul will get his jaw fixed and then get back under the circus canvas and sell another big fight.

Joshua might fight in February, but March is more likely. It will be a far more competitive fight and he needs that after his week and fight in Miami. He also deserves a real fight. “I got the win; let’s move on,” insisted Joshua.

    Yep, let’s do that.
