State Sen. Gerald Allen is partnering with an alumni association to establish a new UA scholarship in memory of assassinated conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Allen has served in the state Senate since 2010 as a republican and announced his run for reelection in July. He is funding the initial endowment, partnering with The University of Alabama National Alumni Association to award students beginning in 2027.
“We are grateful for Sen. Allen’s commitment to supporting UA students in achieving success during their time at The Capstone,” said Jimmy Warren, executive director of the National Alumni Association.
The scholarship’s priority consideration will be given to full-time entering freshmen and current undergraduate students from Tuscaloosa County in financial need who exhibit qualities such as leadership, strong moral character and civic engagement.
“The Charlie Kirk Memorial Endowed Scholarship honors the life and values of Charlie Kirk, inspiring future generations to learn, lead, and serve,” Allen said.
Will Notarfrancesco, vice president of TPUSA Alabama, said he “can’t wait” to see how the scholarship will impact Alabama.
“Naming it after Charlie as a memorial scholarship and having it be for leadership and a lot of qualities that Charlie embodied himself is a great thing,” he said.
Around 100 UA students held a vigil at Denny Chimes on the day of Kirk’s assasination to honor the commentator, with the University later removing controversial signage placed on Denny Chimes in favor of and criticizing Kirk.
Kirk dropped out of college in 2012 to co-found Turning Point USA, and he has referred to college as a “scam” in debates and in his book critiquing the higher education system, “The College Scam.”
This isn’t the first time a scholarship was dedicated to the political commentator by a state official. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Oct. 27 that the winner of the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative State Championship would receive a trophy named in honor of Kirk, in addition to $50,000.
Additionally, Robert O’Brien, former national security advisor during President Donald Trump’s first term, announced in September that he and his wife would be funding the Charlie Kirk Memorial Scholarship to be awarded annually to one high school senior, giving special consideration to students from Utah or who are applying to colleges in Utah.
“Charlie Kirk’s spirit will live on through every student that this scholarship supports, hopefully inspiring generations to come,” Allen said.
