Sylvester Stallone is certainly no stranger to tremendous hardship.
Experiencing his own meteoric rise in the entertainment industry, the 79-year-old icon went from a nearly penniless struggling actor to taking home the Academy Award for Best Picture within the span of one incredibly eventful year in the mid 1970s.
With his success mirroring that of Rocky Balboa's own personal journey in 1976's Rocky, Stallone has faced off against a number of challenges in both his personal and professional life.
Even as he scaled to the top of the entertainment industry with Rocky's universal success, Stallone nevertheless dealt with his own mounting hardships, including a difficult relationship to his family.
Opening up about these struggles in a recent interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, the 79-year-old Rambo star discussed his mixed feelings winning the Oscar in 1976: an achievement that felt less than satisfying since his parents opted to avoid attending the ceremony.
"It's a volcanic moment, and then it was very sad," Stallone said. "You want people that you love that denied you, now you're here, you're at the Oscar, and they don't want to go...You realize that, at that moment, that you're never ever going to come to terms with this...”
"It's a real learning lesson, Gayle, that parents should really wise up," the actor bluntly went on to say.
"Kids are the same as soft clay," Stallone continued. "They really are. You mold them, and you dent them, and you hurt them, or you drop them off the table, and they're not the same shape anymore. I still walk around with it. And I wish I couldn't. And I pray, and I do everything, but it's always there.”
Not only did Stallone star in the classic boxing film; he also wrote the film while nearly homeless, refusing to let producers cast anyone else in the lead role save for him.
Of course, Rocky went on to become a smash hit both critically and commercially, spawning five sequels and three equally successful spin-off movies starring Michael B. Jordan
