After years of keeping fans waiting, Morrissey has finally made the announcement. The singer-songwriter has officially signed with Sire Records, bringing an end to several years without a label.
The former Smiths frontman announced the news on Instagram and his official website, posting a photo of the Sire Records logo. Beyond a few celebratory emojis, Morrissey didn’t say much, but a rep confirmed to Rolling Stone that the deal is official.
No release date has been announced for Morrissey’s new music on Sire Records, but fans could hear it sooner rather than later. Since 2020’s I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, Morrissey hasn’t released a solo album, but he’s teased two follow-up projects that are still unreleased.
Between 2020 and 2021, Morrissey worked with producer Andrew Watt on Bonfire of the Teenagers, an album planned to include Miley Cyrus, Chad Smith, Flea and Iggy Pop.
Originally set to come out via BMG in November 2020, the album’s release fell through when the label dropped Morrissey.
He eventually brought the album to Capitol Records. Although the single “Rebels Without Applause” came out, the album was shelved, and Morrissey parted ways with the label.
In an interview last year, Morrissey claimed the album had been “gagged” and suggested that “idiot culture” was responsible for holding it back.
“We are still in the grip of idiot culture, it’s everywhere you look,” he told The Telegraph. “Naturally I’m one of the first to be gagged since my entire life has relied on free speech.”
It seemed Morrissey was alluding to the controversy over some of his political opinions, especially on immigration. Over the years, he has voiced concern about the impact of immigration on British culture, saying that mass immigration was causing the “British identity” to disappear.
Despite the criticism, former bandmate Johnny Marr even said it “cast a shadow over The Smiths,” the singer maintains that he is not far right. Cyrus reportedly asked for her contribution to the album to be withdrawn.
After some time, Morrissey revealed another album, first titled Without Music the World Dies, now going by You’re Right, It’s Time. Since its announcement, the project has been delayed multiple times, most recently missing a September 2025 release date.
