James Cameron Gives Shocking Update on Arnold Schwarzeneggers Future in Terminator Series

Arnold Schwarzenegger may be the unofficial mascot of the Terminator franchise, but according to a new update from series creator James Cameron, the 78-year-old acting icon likely won't be returning for any future Terminator installments any time soon.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 71-year-old Cameron confirmed he's keen on revisiting the Terminator series following the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

“Once the dust clears on Avatar in a couple of months, I’m going to really plunge into that,” Cameron told the publication. “There are a lot of narrative problems to solve. The biggest is how do I stay enough ahead of what’s really happening to make it science fiction?”

While Cameron has expressed personal excitement at the prospect of additional entries in the Terminator franchise, the director pointedly said that the series' main star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, won't be returning for any of the planned sequels.

“I can safely say he won’t be [in it],” Cameron says.

As to the reason behind his decision, Cameron said that he believed Terminator: Dark Fate provided a fitting final chapter to Schwarzenegger's time in the series. Moving forward, the director said he wished to focus less on older franchise characters like the T-800 and more on the next generation of characters.

“It’s time for a new generation of characters," Cameron said. "I insisted Arnold had to be involved in [2019 ’s] Terminator: Dark Fate, and it was a great finish to him playing the T-800. There needs to be a broader interpretation of Terminator and the idea of a time war and super intelligence. I want to do new stuff that people aren’t imagining.”

In the past, Schwarzenegger has appeared in almost every entry in the Terminator franchise, starting with 1984's original Terminator and ending with 2019's Terminator: Dark Fate. Though the 78-year-old actor did not personally appear in 2009's Terminator: Salvation, his likeness was used for a CGI cameo of the T-800.
