Stranger Things Jamie Campbell Bower Reveals the Meme He Cannot Quit (Exclusive)

Jamie Campbell Bower knows a thing or two about going viral.

At the Paley Center on Thursday, December 19, the Stranger Things star, 37, stopped by to celebrate the series and reflect on the work that turned him into one of TV’s most recognizable villains. Along the way he shared the meme that still makes him laugh and the moments on set that pushed him the hardest.

When Parade asked if he had a favorite meme, Bower lit up.

“I mean, there’s obviously the one of me drinking coffee, which is hilarious,” he said with a grin.

Bower also admitted he has been leaning into another fan favorite recently too, saying, “I used one recently in a response to a fan tweet, which is just Henry looking Eleven up and down. I’ve quite enjoyed using that as of late, yeah.”

He also opened up about the kind of work that really takes a toll behind the scenes. Asked about his toughest day on set, Bower pointed to the physical demands of playing Henry and Vecna.

“Anytime I have to be on wires and dead still, it is always really, really hard,” he explained. “I love wire work a lot, but it is very uncomfortable, and I do tend to swing like a pendulum. So those are always tricky days, yeah.”

Bower didn’t show up until Stranger Things Season 4 when it was revealed that he was Henry Creel, Dr. Brenner’s first subject at Hawkins National Laboratory. It didn’t take long before fans immediately knew he was the right choice for the show’s most terrifying villain, but pulling those emotions out to perfect the role wasn’t easy.

“For Vecna, there’s this deep, deep, deep resentment. It’s his fuel, so I really had to tap into that, and I consider myself not somebody who holds onto resentment. So, digging that up from within me was quite a lot,” Bower told Variety ahead of season 4 in 2022. “I mean, I wouldn’t speak to people. I wouldn’t speak to anybody outside of the Stranger Things world for at least four days before filming anything. I would find myself doing some pretty wild stuff. If anyone saw me walking around the streets of Atlanta at 2 o’clock in the morning talking to myself, they would understand. I was just bringing up a lot of anger, particularly for Vecna.”

This time around in season 5, he’s been able to at least show a more charming part of himself in the role of Mr. Whatsit (aka Henry, aka One, aka Vecna), but viewers know it won’t last long. With only four episodes of the final season left, fans can’t wait to see how everything unfolds.

Stranger Things Season 5 Volume II premieres on Christmas Day followed by the finale on New Years Eve.
