Last-minute donations to Toys for Tots cause delivery delays, concerns that toys won’t arrive before Christmas

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Late donations for the News10NBC Toys for Tots Holiday Drive is causing some delivery delays and could stop toys from getting to local kids in time for Christmas. Toy collection began in early October, but organizers say many donations came in at the last minute, close to the Dec. 14 deadline, making their work more difficult.

There are dozens of boxes lined up against the wall at the drive’s headquarters, stretching down to the end of the hall, filled with thousands of toys. The goal is to sort everything, deliver the toys, and get them underneath the tree in time for kids to open up on Christmas Day.

Alexis Hogle is the coordinator for multiple local counties. She says they work with over 400 agencies to make sure this Christmas is a merry one for kids in need.

“We just finished unloading a U-Haul so that we could get stuff sorted, counted and right back out the door so I need patience from my agencies,” Hogle said.

Marsha Augustin, News10NBC: “Do you have enough volunteers? Do you have enough toys?”

Alexis Hogle: “That’s going to depend on what comes in on the rest of my trucks.”

Hogle says she has 12 agencies left to fulfill, down from 406. She has 80 boxes of toys to pick up, but only two U-Hauls and two days left to do it. “There’s 250,000 kids across the eight counties that we cover. We only hit maybe 50,000 of them,” she said.

Another issue is not having enough toys for older kids. Hogle showed empty boxes for ages 6 through teens. “We need more toys. Everybody wants toys. Well, I can only give out what we get in. Ages 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and teens. Those are the ones that everyone forgets about,” Hogle said.

Marsha Whitmore: “Looking around the facility, it looks like you are getting the community support. Are all the toys coming in at the last minute?”

Alexis Hogle: “That’s exactly what’s happened. And that’s what always ends up happening. If we had those calls back in October, November, when these boxes first went out, we wouldn’t be where we are right now.”

The Renaissance Academy Charter School in Rochester was one school that was impacted by the delay.

“We were concerned for our families. We have heavily relied on Toys for Tots to help support the needs of our families. This year we had more families in need,” said Dr. Cait Loury, chief educational officer at Renaissance Academy Charter School.

On Thursday, they received an email from Toys for Tots saying the toys are available for them to pick up.

“This means a lot to our families and we are really grateful to Toys for Tots to provide these toys for the kids even if it was a little later than expected,” Loury said.

The drop-off boxes for Toys for Tots have already been picked up. However, you can still donate money to the drive online here. This year’s goal is to collect at least 125,000 toys. There is no final toy count in yet.
