Indie Rock Icon, 59, Joins Beloved Folksters in Brilliant Performance: Icing on the Cake

While some famous musicians are known for doing one style of music particularly well, others are known for their impressive versatility. Take, for example, bassist Tommy Stinson. Not only was he one of the founding members of renowned indie rock band The Replacements, but he was also an indispensable part of Guns N' Roses (from 1998 to 2016). Now, the iconic musician has joined forces with beloved folk rock band the Mountain Goats, and their recent appearance on Stephen Colbert's Late Show is blowing fans away.

It makes sense that Stinson was on board for the appearance, as he played on the new Mountain Goats album Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan (which also features guest appearances from the likes of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mikaela Davis and Josh Kaufman). Stinson appears on two tracks — "Cold at Night" and "Dawn of Revelation" — the former of which Stinson and the members of the Mountain Goats rocked live on the Late Show.

Commenters on a YouTube clip of the performance were thrilled to see the revered bass player and the popular folksters join forces.

"Colbert loves the Goats and so do I. Seen them play a dozen times and can't wait to see them a dozen more. This performance was a masterpiece from the violins to the cello to the drums to Matty Bones on guitar to TOMMY STINSON on bass!?!? Brilliant!" declared one person.

"Tommy Stinson on Bass! Right On!" raved a second person, with a third gushing, "Fantastic as always! Tommy Stinson on bass is icing on the already elegantly iced cake!"

How Tommy Stinson 'became his own thing'

In an interview on his official website given ahead of the 2017 release of his band Bash & Pop's album Anything Could Happen, Stinson explained how working with such a diverse group of musicians influenced his own style.

“If you’ve been in a band for 10 years, like I was with The Replacements, and grew up in that, and then did my own things like Bash & Pop, Perfect and then you go into Guns N’ Roses, I would be foolish to try and portray that I wouldn’t have some of those influences in everything I do," he said.

"I think if you spend enough time with someone, whether with a girl or a friend or a band or whatever, you’re going to walk away with influences from those things," he continued, adding, "They’re going to permeate in some way, you’ve just got to accept that and it’s cool. It’s part of life, it’s part of living and growing and becoming your own thing and also knowing where your roots are.”

Fans hoping to catch Stinson live can check out his website for upcoming tour dates, including a holiday show with Soul Asylum on Dec. 27 in Minneapolis.
