Mrs. Sue Thomas Preston
Mrs. Sue Thomas Preston departed this earthly life to begin her heavenly walk with Jesus at the age of 91 with her family present at her bedside. She was pronounced deceased at 12:43 p.m. E.S.T. Wednesday afternoon December 17, 2025 at the Wellington Manner Assisted Living in Newport, Tennessee where she made her home.
Her son-in-law, Rev. John Hale, pastor of the Newport Church of the Nazarene, will officiate the 3 p.m. Friday afternoon December 19th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow beside her husband, James Allen Preston, in the Garden of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be only on Friday December 19th from 10 a.m. until the 3 p.m. services at Sanderson in Carthage.
She was born Linda Sue Thomas in the Turkey Creek Community of Smith County on October 7, 1934 and was blessed from the Lord with a long and relatively healthy life and very happy life because she was near her family.
She was one of two daughters born to the late Willie Bronice (Bill) Thomas who died at the age of 63 on November 1, 1973 and Lellie B Franklin Thomas Bradley who died at the age of 85 on July 4, 1999.
A baby sister, Patricia Lue Thomas, died at 2 days of age on August 24, 1953.
Mrs. Preston was united in marriage at the Carthage Church of The Nazarene on June 12, 1960 to Gordonsville native, James Allen (Hoss Allen) Preston who preceded her in death on May 6,1990 at the age of 57 following almost thirty years of marriage.
She was saved as a young girl and was united with the Carthage Church of the Nazarene and after relocating to Newport moved her membership to the Newport Church of the Nazarene.
Her work career consisted of serving as a clerk at the former Ben Franklin Store in Carthage for five- & one-half years and later at the former Carthage I G A as a checker for four- & one-half years before retiring in 1990.
Surviving are her two daughters, Melissa Preston Christensen and Ricky Moss of Carthage, Melinda Preston Hale and husband Rev. John Hale; two grandchildren, Tamela Van de Leuv and husband Jason of Lebanon, Hunter Grigg of Newport; two great-grandchildren, Mason Grigg and Tetra Lankford both of Newport.
The Preston Family requests memorials be made to the Newport Church of the Nazarene Building Fund.
