ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With winter officially starting Sunday, the City of Rochester is urging its residents to help keep sidewalks safe from piled-up snow and ice.
Rochester is one of only three U.S. cities that clear residential sidewalks. When there are four inches or more of snow, the city sends out sidewalk plows to clear 800 miles of sidewalks that are at least five feet wide.
But, when snowfall is less than four inches, residents are expected to clear snow and ice from the sidewalks themselves, which is required by the city.

“Per our city code, and also as a point of neighborly obligation, it is all of our responsibility to clear the snow and ice from sidewalks in front of your homes and businesses. So, I beg of our community, I implore of our community, to please make sure that you are clearing snow and ice in front of your home and business,” Mayor Evans said.
Officials also warned against shoveling or plowing snow from private property onto city streets or sidewalks.
Drivers are advised to slow down on icy roads and give plows enough room to work.
