Author Freida McFadden is excited for everybody to see The Housemaid, the movie starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. McFadden released the book of the same name in April 2022, and she has had plenty to say about the movie version. In fact, she has made a bold revelation about what she thinks of the film that might surprise people.
The Housemaid opens in theaters on December 19. In September, McFadden shared via Instagram that she had been able to see a "sneak preview" of the movie. She admitted that she didn't hesitate to tell her husband what she really thought of it as they left the theater.
"The second it was over, I turned to my husband in the theater and said, 'Omg, I think it was better than the book!' (And he said, 'Yeah.')," McFadden declared.
She noted, "They captured everything that readers love about the novel!" McFadden gushed over the cast's performances, writing that they were "nothing short of incredible."
On December 3, McFadden talked with People at the New York premiere of The Housemaid. She told the media outlet, "I just thought the end was so exciting, and it really made the whole thing go out with a bang."
Director Paul Feig talked to The Hollywood Reporter at the Los Angeles premiere. Feig wouldn't reveal specific spoilers about The Housemaid movie, other than to acknowledge a big twist that happened in the book and tease the ending. The ending, he explained, is different than what McFadden had in the book.
Feig explained, "No spoilers, but there are relationships I wanted to have a final button on, and so we were able to do that" in changing the ending of the movie compared to the book.
Could additional movies from McFadden's The Housemaid series become movies, too? Despite the changed ending for the film, it seems that it is a real possibility. McFadden told People, "Oh my God, I would love that."
She added, "That would be a dream." McFadden added that Feig is "incredible" and feels he would do an amazing job with a sequel.
Feig seems on board with the idea of a sequel. He told The Hollywood Reporter, "If people show up and see it, I would love to see what Mille does next," by bringing the next books to movie theaters as well.
The dynamic between McFadden, who is an executive producer on The Housemaid, and Feig seemed to flow quite smoothly. Feig told People that hearing how McFadden raved over him was "such a relief and a real joy."
He noted he tried "to be very, very true to the book," aside from shifting some things to make them better for the movie screen. Then, as he noted, "We added an extra ending onto it." The wait for The Housemaid to premiere in theaters has been long, but fans will not have to wait much longer to find out just what that new ending is.
