Actress and singer Zooey Deschanel is sharing her thoughts about her New Girl character, Jessica "Jess" Day's romance with Nick Miller, played by Jake Johnson.
During the December 17 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Deschanel discussed Jess and Nick's off-and-on-again relationship on the Fox sitcom, which had a seven-season run until 2018. When asked if she believed "Jess and Nick should have ended up together," Deschanel referenced that the fictional couple got married in Season 7, Episode 7. The Elf actress said that she would have preferred if Nick and Jess's relationship was more ambiguous when the show ended.
"I kind of wished, this was just my own personal feeling because I like leaving things a little unfinished because I like people to decide like what they think happened," said Deschanel in the December 2025 interview. "And it's sometimes unsatisfying for people and I know it's not like really a network TV type ending, but I thought we should like end it before people knew whether it happened or not. So in their heads they can come up with what it was."
She then said that she loves the ending of the 1967 film, The Graduate, wherein Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross) leaves her wedding to be with Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman). However, it is unclear if Elaine and Benjamin made the right choice because they seem uncomfortable as they sit together.
"I'm like, 'What's happening?' And then they have this like moment of like, 'We don't know.' And I like that. Okay, that's interesting. I like that you're like, 'Maybe let them decide'. I'd rather let the people argue," said Deschanel during the interview.

In a 2014 panel at the Paley Center for Media, alongside her New Girl co-stars, Deschanel discussed Nick and Jess's sometimes fiery dynamic. She compared the couple to the Cheers characters Sam Malone (Ted Danson) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long).
"I just love that they kind of had a love-hate relationship which always is exciting to watch," said Deschanel during the panel.
