Jaylon Johnson Has a Great Story of How He Picked Off Shedeur Sanders

A reminder that Jaylon Johnson’s football IQ is through the roof popped up in the Chicago Bears’ Week 15 win against the Cleveland Browns.

Check out what CB1 had to say about his interception of Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders when he snatched a ball away that was intended for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy:

Jaylon Johnson had his first pick of the season – it was a dandy. He joined me postgame to discuss, plus 3 more takeaways – Bears #1 with 30 total…“I seen him (Jerry Jeudy) and Shedeur talking, so I figured the ball was coming my way…”@NFLGameDay @nflnetwork #DaBears pic.twitter.com/DLG8UqI84Y

    Words from Jaylon Johnson:

“I’ve honestly been a fan of Jeudy’s game for a long time. We went at it in high school and things like that, so just to be able to make a play in that moment, I seen him and Sheduer talking, so I figured the ball was coming my way. Just trying to be on my P’s and Q’s and fortunate enough for God to put me in a position to make a play.”

This is the type of thing I imagine coaches and talent evaluators underscore when discussing a player’s football IQ and awareness levels. Jaylon Johnson noticing that Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Jerry Jeudy were taking extra time after breaking the huddle and recognizing that as a sign that the ball could be forced his way is a remarkable show of football intelligence. Sure, the Bears missed Johnson’s presence during his stint on injured reserve. But they also missed the intangibles that he brings to the table. It is soooo good to have him back.

The Bears need Jaylon Johnson at his best in Week 16

Taking down the Browns was expected. Now, the Bears move onto a tougher task — knocking off the Green Bay Packers. And in order to do so, they will need Jaylon Johnson to bring his A-game to the field on Saturday night. Or as Johnson might put it, on his P’s and Q’s.

Despite dealing with injuries, wide receiver Christian Watson is expected to be in the Green Bay lineup this week. Watson is Pro Football Focus’ seventh-highest graded receiver. The Packers also boast another pair of receivers who check in among PFF’s top-50 at the position, with Dontavion Wicks (45th) and Matthew Golden (47th) grading out as above average players at the position. We saw Green Bay use its speed advantage in its first matchup against Chicago. If it can pull it off again, then the Bears’ secondary could be in or a long day.

Even though this has been an injury-shortened season for Jaylon Johnson, this still could turn out to be one of his best. And it certainly has a strong case to be considered the the most enjoyable for the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback. The 2025 season marks the first in which Johnson has played for a Bears team that will finish with a winning record in his seven-year career. If the Bears get a win (and some help from the Pittsburgh Steelers) this week, they can punch their ticket to the playoffs. Johnson was a rookie when the 2020 team qualified for the postseason, but didn’t play because of a shoulder injury.

THINGS ARE LOOKING UP FOR THE CHICAGO BEARS PLAYOFF ODDS THIS WEEK

Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen has done a bang-up job orchestrating a defense that has been without its top cornerbacks for multiple extended stretches throughout the year. Having Jaylon Johnson back at full speed for the final three regular-season games figures to help matters on that side of the ball. Johnson played on just 40.4 percent of the snaps last week, but that was likely a coaching decision rooted in the Bears playing in a blowout. Perhaps the extra rest last week will give him more time on the field than the 66 percent snap share he had the first time the Bears and Packers squared off. I guess we’ll find out on Saturday.
