While there’s no denying that 2025 has been a major year for new music, some listeners prefer the hits of decades past. Enter: “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls.
“Iris,” written by the band’s lead singer, John Rzenik, snagged some major accolades on Billboard’s 2025 Year-End Charts, including Global 200 Songs, Alternative Digital Sales, and Global Excl. U.S. Songs.
Rzenik, who turned 60 years old on December 5, wrote “Iris” in 1997 for the City of Angels soundtrack, giving way to lyrics that have a yearning, cinematic feel.
“Iris” was featured on the album Dizzy Up the Girl when the band’s lineup was Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin.
As of 2025, Rzeznik and Takac, 61, remain the core members of the Goo Goo Dolls. Malinin, 58, the drummer during the “Iris” era, left the band in 2013.

Since then, the band has had different touring and session drummers, but no permanent official drummer publicly announced.
Earlier this month, Rzeznik performed at Demi Lovato’s wedding to husband Jordan "Jutes" Lutes. The couple chose “Iris” as their first dance.
“That’s like one of the coolest things. That was, in the moment, me and Demi were looking at each other, and I was just like, ‘What’s going on right now?!’ I was like, ‘This is the most iconic song ever. He’s right there, and it’s for us!’” Lutes, 34, recalled during an episode of the Zach Sang Show. "Icon. Such a legend for doing that.”
Lutes went on to praise Rzeznik’s sound after all these years.
“It was just him and an acoustic [guitar]. I was thinking—’cause I looked up the acoustic version, a couple different acoustic versions online—and they were kind of more chill. So I was like, that’s obviously what he’s going to do. There’s no way he’s going to come in and just like rip—and he just ripped it,” he gushed, adding that the performance was "unreal" and that Rzeznik "really killed it."
