A Greeley-based chamber opera company will put on two free showings of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” this weekend at a Greeley church.
Opera Elan will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3800 W. 20th St., according to an Opera Elan news release.
The story, written by Gian Carlo Menotti and first performed in 1951, follows a young disabled boy named Amahl, who lives with his mother in poverty among shepherds near Bethlehem. One night, three kings stop at their dwelling for shelter, revealing they were on their way with gifts to celebrate the birth of Christ, according to the release.
“Ahmal’s mother commits a great act of transgression in desperation, which allows the true miracle and meaning of Christmas to be shown,” the release reads.
The show is free, but the group will accept donations to offset production costs.
