Thousands of Coloradans in dark as crews work to restore power; more wind, critical fire danger forecast for Friday

Thousands of people from the Front Range to the Eastern Plains remained without electricity Thursday morning due to weather-related outages as forecasters predict more high winds to continue through Friday.

As of 7:30 a.m., about 94,000 Xcel customers were without power, according to the utility company’s outage map. Many lost power Wednesday morning as part of a preventative shut-off amid high wildlife risk.

Crews worked to restore power Wednesday night, as soon as it was safe, Xcel said. Restoring power will take several days and a second round of severe wind forecast for Friday morning could impede the process.

Wind gusts topped 100 mph along some parts of the Front Range and high country Wednesday.

The winds pushed east Wednesday night as at least nine fires in Yuma County in the Eastern Plains ignited, alarming locals of potential rapid fire spread. All but one were extinguished, residents were told to stay vigilant as wind gusts up to 70 mph were forecast Thursday along the Colorado-Kansas border.

“These strong winds and dry conditions will lead to rapid wildfire spread and blowing dust,” the National Weather Service Office in Goodland, Kansas, said. “Travel and fires are not advised today!”

The second surge of wind is predicted to be more prolonged than Wednesday’s overnight winds. The strongest surge will be between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. with winds expected to subside around 5 p.m., the weather service said.

Strong winds combined with warm and dry conditions will create critical fire weather conditions again Friday, National Weather Service forecasters in Boulder said.

Gusts up to 85 mph will be possible late Thursday night across the Front Range mountains and foothills, before spreading to lower elevations west of I-25.
