ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two students at RCSD’s John Williams School No. 5 took the oath of office on Wednesday after their peers elected them to serve as class presidents.
Mayor Malik Evans was on hand to administer the oath of office to Autum Alexander and Za-Niyah King. News10NBC spoke with the newly elected presidents about what they hope to achieve.
“Probably talk to the teacher, see if we can come upstairs sometimes, have a little party, watch movies and stuff,” Za-Niyah King said.
Autum Alexander has a different perspective on how to handle classroom discipline.
“When people get in trouble, I don’t think everybody should get in trouble. Just that person. Or like, if we’re doing something fun, that one person that’s being bad should just be left out,” Alexander said.
The ceremony was part of the school’s partnership with the city and its Pillars of Hope program. It aims to give students a firsthand look at civic responsibility and serving in local government.
