If holiday desserts are already making their way onto the counter, this is one bakery item worth taking a second look at.
On Tuesday, December 16, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a voluntary recall issued by The James Skinner LLC for a Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake after a labeling error was discovered. In short: some cakes that contain walnuts were packaged with the wrong label, which failed to clearly list that allergen.
Tree nuts are considered a major food allergen, and reactions can be severe for people who are allergic. Even a small labeling mistake can put shoppers at real risk, especially during the holidays, when food is often shared.

According to the company’s announcement, the recall involves a single lot of Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake that was packaged correctly but mislabeled on some individual units. While the cakes were packed as Maple Walnut Coffee Cake, they were accidentally labeled as Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake.
That raspberry label does not list walnuts in the ingredient list, even though the product contains them. Through the clear lid, the difference is easy to spot: the recalled cake has walnuts and a brown maple topping, while a raspberry coffee cake has no nuts and a red topping.
