Little House on the Prairie star Karen Grassle revealed that her difficult relationship with Michael Landon caused her to distance herself from the series—and from fans.
The actress, who played Caroline “Ma” Ingalls on the NBC drama series from 1974 to 1982, told People magazine that she didn’t always join the rest of the cast for fan events during the show’s heyday in the 1970s and ‘80s. “I had limited my interactions with fans very much,” Grassle, 83, said in the December 2025 interview. “I really didn't go to many events. I didn't hang out with everybody. I separated myself.”
The actress explained that her issues with the show started when Landon, who was not only he co-star but also an executive producer, refused to give her a raise ahead of the second season of the hit series. “I ran myself into the ground with resentment and anger and hurt feelings and just pure exhaustion,” she shared.
Grassle previously told The New York Post that Landon refused her raise because he felt that the Caroline character wasn’t popular with fans and that her earnings should be the same as the child actors on the show. “I felt insulted as his co-star on a hit series,” she said. “I didn’t want to gouge anybody, but I expected a fair wage.”
Grassle also claimed that she was disrespected on the set of the beloved TV series, but was afraid to “rebuke” Landon. Instead, she “kept up the professionalism.” “I’d be the good girl, play the part and hope,” she said.
Grassle told People that she began to really feel the love from fans four decades after Little House wrapped. “I started with social media, and I started going out to these events,“ she said. “I was astonished at what I learned about people's affection for the character of Caroline. I had no idea the depth of affection that people had for this character. It just filled my heart because I worked so hard to make something special out of that character, and there were many days that I did not look forward to going to work.”
While she separated from Little House at the height of her pain, Grassle made amends with Landon before his 1991 death. “We sorted things out before he passed,” she told Buzzfeed in November. “I have only forgiveness and appreciation for his gifts and the opportunity that he gave me.”
