Several fires burn in Yuma County as strong winds move across Colorado

Several fires that sparked Wednesday evening in Yuma County could spread quickly amid strong winds moving across the state, authorities warned.

As of 11:55 p.m, three fires were actively burning, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on social media. The largest fire was burning south of Eckley, though a size estimate was not immediately available

At least nine fires were reported Wednesday evening, officials said, warning residents to seek safety.

“If a fire is approaching your home, evacuate immediately. Use the highway to travel to the nearest town and turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights while driving,” Yuma County’s Office of Emergency Management said in a social media post. “Please stay alert, follow emergency instructions, and prioritize your safety.”

Deputies were notifying residents to evacuate and sending alerts via 911 calls, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities also urged residents to use their own discretion whether to leave their homes and seek safety.

“In case of evacuation please drive with your hazard lights on, watch for  blown over power poles/lines or large debris on the road,” the sheriff’s office warned.

Emergency officials asked anyone with a tractor and disk ready to deploy to help with the fires to call 970-397-0431.

Evacuation centers are set up at Yuma High School, Grassroots in Joes and the Wray City Hall.

A high wind warning, issued by the National Weather Service Office in Boulder, remains in effect until 5 p.m. Thursday for Yuma and Kit Carson counties. Forecasters said to expect northwest winds between 30 and 50 mph with gusts up to 80 mph.

“Travel will be dangerous and possibly life-threatening,” the weather service said in an advisory issued at 10:15 p.m. “Plumes  of blowing dust will create pockets of low visibility. Visibilities will likely change rapidly over short distances,  making travel hazardous in these areas.”
