The historic County Administration Center in downtown San Diego will be illuminated in blue and white Wednesday night in remembrance of the victims and in solidarity with the survivors of the recent mass shooting in Sydney, Australia.
Fifteen people were killed and dozens injured during a Hanukkah celebration Sunday on Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach,
The lighting was requested by Supervisor Joel Anderson and will take place on the fourth night of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
Blue and white are the traditional colors of Judaism and of the flag of Israel.
Anderson’s request was praised by County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Jordan Z. Marks, who is Jewish.
“The only time that Hanukkah was recognized by the county in this way was when Supervisor Anderson requested it,” said Marks. “As a Jew, I’m grateful that Joel understands this is a sacred season of joy, love, and light.”
“Jordan is an incredible partner and I share his belief that all faiths should be recognized during this holiday season,” said Anderson. “We refuse to place a cap on love and celebration here in San Diego County.”
Over the years, the historic building has been illuminated in recognition of other events and causes, from LGBTQ pride to support for Ukraine.
On Monday, Anderson will be join Marks to light a menorah at the County Administration Center on the last day of Hanukkah.
