I Can’t Stop Thinking About the Time Colston Loveland Laid Out Myles Garrett With a Chip Block

On the one hand, I know my full focus should be on Packers Week. But on the other hand, I knew I couldn’t fully immerse myself into Week 16’s showdown until I pushed this Colston Loveland post out the door. So, here I am, happy to share this Loveland block on Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett that has been on my mind all week long.

Please enjoy:

It isn’t often you see Myles Garrett get pushed around like that, so to sea a Bears rookie tight end get in on the fun put a big, stupid smile on my face. Not just because of the block, but also who was delivering it. That chip block on Garrett is just the latest Colston Loveland highlight that deserves to be played on a loop and added to his rookie season sizzle reel. Loveland’s highlight reel has been growing since the bye. That Loveland has showed continued improvement while Chicago’s football team continues to stack wins has been one of the best developments of the 2025 season.

Colston Loveland’s development has been key in the Bears’ surge

Don’t look now, by Colston Loveland is the highest-graded rookie tight end at Pro Football Focus. Also, he checks in as the seventh-highest-graded overall tight end. Landing a top-10 player at his position with a first-round pick feels like a significant accomplishment for the powers that be at Halas Hall. And while there is still so much progress to make on the developmental arc, the rookie seems to really be coming into his own.

This is what Colston Loveland’s stat line looks like in his last eight games:

    41 targets (5.1 per game) 31 catches (3.9 pergame) 420 yards (52.5 per game) 4 touchdowns

LOOK WHO HAS THE NFL’S BEST OFFENSE SINCE WEEK 5

That comes out to a per-17 game pace of 87 targets, 66 receptions, 893 yards, and 8 touchdowns. But that snapshot of numbers only begins to capture the rookie’s growth. Because it isn’t just the raw numbers. We have seen an increase in playing time for Loveland, who has been on the field for 68.1 percent of the offensive snaps in those games. Clearly, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson (1) wants Loveland on the field and (2) is doing what he can to make sure the rookie gets the rock.

It isn’t just the coaching staff showing faith in the University of Michigan product. Quarterback Caleb Williams has been vocal with his support of Colston Loveland. And the numbers back it up. These are Williams’ stats when targeting Loveland this year:

    39/53 (73.6%) 498 yards 4 touchdowns 0 interceptions 127.7 passer rating

My favorite Caleb Williams-Colston Loveland stat isn’t the 127.7 passer rating, but it is up there with my faves. And it isn’t the 9.4 yards per attempt Caleb has when throwing to the big tight end. That is also among my favorite factoids. But my absolute favorite Colston-Caleb stat is that 25 of the 39 connections between the two have resulted in a first down. Let’s put it another way: 64.1 percent of the completed passes from Williams to Loveland have moved the chains for Chicago’s offense. That. Is. HUGE.

The timing is good for Colston Loveland to be on a heater. Not only is it valuable to be playing your best ball down the stretch, but it also comes at a time when there is some uncertainty among the pass catchers. Bears receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III are dealing with injuries that have held them out of practice and could keep them from playing on Saturday against the Green Bay Packers. It would stink if Chicago’s football team went into this one short-handed. But I do feel better knowing that Loveland is available and playing well.
